Brazilian Authorities Will Revive Fraud Case Against George Santos

Last edited Mon Jan 2, 2023, 08:38 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: New York Times

When Representative-elect George Santos takes his seat in Congress on Tuesday, he will do so under the shadow of active investigations by federal and local prosecutors into potential criminal activity during his two congressional campaigns. But an older criminal case may be more pressing: Brazilian law enforcement authorities intend to revive fraud charges against Mr. Santos, and will seek his formal response, prosecutors told The New York Times on Monday.

The matter, which stemmed from an incident in 2008 regarding a stolen checkbook, had been suspended for the better part of a decade because the police were unable to locate him. A spokeswoman for the Rio de Janeiro prosecutor’s office said that with Mr. Santos’s whereabouts identified, a formal request will be made to the U.S. Justice Department to notify him of the charges, a necessary step after which the case will proceed with or without him.

The criminal case in Brazil was first disclosed in a New York Times investigation that uncovered broad discrepancies in his resume and questions about his financial dealings. Just a month before his 20th birthday, Mr. Santos entered a small clothing store in the Brazilian city of Niteroi outside Rio de Janeiro. He spent nearly $700 using a stolen checkbook and a false name, court records show.

Mr. Santos admitted the fraud to the shop owner in August 2009, writing on Orkut, a popular social media website in Brazil, “I know I screwed up, but I want to pay.” In 2010, he and his mother told the police that he had stolen the checkbook of a man his mother used to work for, and used it to make fraudulent purchases. A judge approved the charge in September 2011 and ordered Mr. Santos to respond to the case. But by October, he was already in the United States and working at Dish Network in College Point, Queens, company records show.

He can place his vote in the US House in absentia from his jail cell in Brazil. Then the Fascist Rethugs can change the US Constitution and Santos can come back to the US and run for president.

How did the GOP ever sink so low ?

Barack Obama had to show his birth certificate. All Santos has to do is show either his birth certificate or his naturalization papers. Evidently he has done neither, and the media has not reported that they have checked his claim of being born in a New York hospital. With all his other lies, one would think that his citizenship status would be worthy of verifying.

Obama didn't HAVE to show his birth certificate. He did it because the loony tunes were spreading unwarranted conspiracy theories based on contrived Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Personally, I believe this speculation is similar.

The reason I ask is that I haven't heard of the question of either his citizenship or his birthplace being resolved in any substantive way.

He says he's a U.S. citizen, but as much as he's been shown to have lied about so many other things, I see no reason to trust his word. I've seen reports that he claims to have been born in New York but has not produced a birth certificate, which would clear things up nicely. That in itself seems suspicious to me.

EDITED TO ADD: He has told some people he was born in the U.S., but others say he told them he was born in Brazil. See this article for an example: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/12/24/2143670/-Is-George-Santos-A-Citizen

If he's a Brazilian citizen, which I don't know if he is, he could have traveled here on a Brazilian passport and a tourist visa.

I honestly don't know what country he's a citizen of, because searching hasn't turned up anything conclusive. You sounded pretty sure, so I thought you might have seen something conclusive about it.

Here are some examples of what I've been finding:

Santos was born to Fatima Aziza Caruso Horta Devolder, who died on December 23, 2016, and
Gercino Antonio dos Santos Jr., both of whom were born in Brazil.

... over stayed his visa, and then ran for congress? That seems highly unlikely, even without the fact that multiple law enforcement agencies are actively investigating him and have access to all the records. You don't think they would start with that? If he was not a citizen, he would be in an ICE detention center by now.

All of this speculation is something of a variant of the fear that undocumented aliens are voting in large numbers and skewing our elections. Granted that this is pretty much a "special" case, but the idea that an undocumented alien would expose himself by running for congress is far fetched.

But everything about him (the amount of lies he's known to have told, etc.) is far-fetched.

The jury is still out on his citizenship, imo. He has every reason to want to put this particular issue to rest, and all he needs to do is show either a U.S. passport or a birth certificate. It's hard to fathom why he wouldn't show the evidence that he's a U.S. citizen....if it exists.

Extradition. An extradition treaty between the United States and Brazil was signed on January 13, 1961 and implemented on February 11, 1965. The treaty allows both countries to request the return of individuals if the offense(s) committed are considered crimes by both countries.
