Mitch McConnell Says U.S. Will 'Never' Default On Its Debt As Standoff Looms

Source: Huffington Post

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday the U.S. “never has and never will” default on its debt as the country hit its $34.1 trillion debt ceiling and began what the government called “extraordinary measures” to continue paying bills.

House Republicans under the leadership of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) have threatened to hold President Joe Biden’s administration hostage over the debt limit, demanding spending cuts targeting programs like Social Security and Medicare.

“Periodically the debt ceiling has to be lifted and it’s always a rather contentious effort,” McConnell told reporters in Kentucky. “In the end, I think the important thing to remember is that America must never default on its debt. It never has and never will.”

McConnell added that Republicans will negotiate with Biden over raising the debt limit, even though the White House has signaled that no conditions should be attached to this.

Then be prepared to twist some arms or slap the shit out of your fellow Republicans in the House.

Word must be coming down that the world’s economies shall not be destroyed, which is a very real path if the US government defaults on its debt.

This will be hashed out in the House, not the Senate.

Wall St. would have to hold a lot of guns to a lot of swelled heads to get anything sensible out of this bunch.

r's discovered they could make it contentious in the 1990s and have used the debt ceiling as another weapon against our country ever since. Up yours, shittz.

Joe should say no go to any legislation until a full raise good for multiple years or a repeal of the limit are sent to his desk. And sue about them taking any salaries and expenses until they pass this. Congress has one task to complete before any other this year.

the "grownups" in the Senate say.

Mitchy hasn't snapped to the fact that his party is increasingly being run by the very lunatics the Old, White Greedhead wing allowed in.

Not nearly as stupid as spineless Kev or the MAGA overlords who control him, anyway. When it comes to understanding the importance of raising the debt ceiling, he seems to have a much better grasp on reality than the aforementioned gang of idiots.

The turtle has done some things I'll never forgive him for (3 of them are currently on the Supreme Court), but if he can use his power to kick some asses in the House and head off this particular crisis, I will be appreciative. I still won't forgive him for the awful things he's done, but I believe in giving credit where credit is due.
