M&M's pulls 'spokescandies' amid right-wing outrage, before Super Bowl

Source: CNBC

Candy maker Mars said Monday it is replacing its M&Ms “spokescandies” with actress Maya Rudolph after facing right-wing criticism over its mascot makeover.

Rudolph will star in the candy brand’s Super Bowl LVII commercial, Chief Marketing Officer Gabrielle Wesley told CNBC. It will be the actor’s first appearance as the brand’s spokesperson and “Chief of Fun.”

“The original colorful cast of M&M’S spokescandies are, at present, pursuing other personal passions,” said Wesley.

She noted that in the coming weeks, the company will announce “what the M&M’S spokescandies are up to over the next few weeks before, during and after Super Bowl LVII,” via their website and social media channels.

They had the bowl of M&Ms with no brown ones deep in the contract for the venue to better insure that the specs for the stage and such were followed. They had been through a stage collapse and vowed to never have that again. They also had someone inspect the stage and light rigging at each venue before they did a soundcheck.

"This move [A special edition package with only women M&M's on it, including the new Purple one] is the latest in a series of marketing moves M&’s has made to promote inclusivity. Its previous announcement involved the introduction of the purple female M&M who represents body positivity and self-acceptance.”

Body positivity and self acceptance for women. This is what the right is ranting against, and M&M caved.

A quick check of the candy's website shows that Purple is now "the insecure, unsure" M&M.

Thanks for nothing, Mars/M&M's.

I can understand why the wing nuts are becoming agitated. Superimpose Ron Desantis touring a flood zone, and you have Rhonda Santis. Only they can't say THAT, so they attack a piece of candy over some other whimsical detail. Another item that is going to stick in their craw is the question 'Who wore it better?" Because it's obvious that the answer is Purple.

RWNJ's objected, so thousands of people Googled to find out what the story is, who would never have heard about it otherwise. Now Mars is creating a whole new program to follow the new characters, thus stirring up much more publicity than they would have otherwise gotten. :golfclap:

Contacted through a spokeperson, Purple remarked "just be sure you spell my name right".

Jan 2023

they should come out with one of the spokes-candies as a fox that is bent over with its' head up it's backside. Or if that seems like too much then how about the fox one standing next to one that is the Russian hammer and cycle and the fox could have it's arm around the Russian one. Maybe they could have one that is a George Santos spokes-candy and it is saying how it's been a t-bone steak it's whole life. Maybe a spokes-candy that has a tin foil hat on and instead of the letters characters M&M it could have
GQP.

Maybe the Democratic Party could fund raise with something like this. Take the candies I mentioned and start a brand called "Knuckleheads". I'd buy several boxes for a few bucks. You could run a commercial on TV where an orange one is running around and can't keep it's hands to itself. Then after that the orange one meets up with one looking like Putin and he hands him a file folder and the orange one then immediately goes to the bank and makes a deposit.

I guess I missed the “outrage.” It’s hard to keep up!

When I think about it, though - m&m’s seem to be the ultimate inclusive candy. They’re all the same shape and size, and they have no gender at all. They are different colors, but all the same on the inside.

Wouldn’t it be delicious (haha) if Mars decided to say “fuck you” to the MAGAts and declare that m&m’s are gender neutral and that any of them can hold hands with any other. 😃😃
