First sweeping federal gun crime report in 20 years released

Source: AP

By LINDSAY WHITEHURST today

WASHINGTON (AP) — The most expansive federal report in over two decades on guns and crime shows a shrinking turnaround between the time a gun was purchased and when it was recovered from a crime scene, indicating firearms bought legally are more quickly being used in crimes around the country.

It also documents a spike in the use of conversion devices that make a semiautomatic gun fire like a machine gun, along with the growing seizure of so-called ghost guns, privately made firearms that are hard to trace.

The report comes as the nation grapples with a rise in violent crime, particularly from guns.

Much of the data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives report hasn’t been widely available before, and its release is aimed at helping police and policy makers reduce gun violence, said Director Steve Dettelbach. “Information is power,” he said.

Congressional Republicans included provisions in funding legislation for many years that expressly prohibited the government from supporting research into the use of guns in crime.

When I was a kid sent to summer camp, there was an announcement of a camping trip to Moscow (the camp had a cabin there) and I immediately panicked, wondering what I'd gotten into!

Moscow, Vermont, is considered a "suburb" of tourist mecca Stowe, very small and rural - and my camp had their own overnight cabin there, built by campers over the years, in the woods next to a stream. And I finally went on one of those camping trips and was pleasantly surprised...

When I heard the destination "Moscow" I couldn't help remembering hiding in the school basement at 5-years-old as a drill in case the Russians bombed us.

What it did was mandated that "none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be used to advocate or promote gun control.
