Naval Station Norfolk welcomes first Black female commanding officer

Source: NBC - WAVY 10

The world’s largest naval base will soon have its first Black woman as commanding officer.

Capt. Janet Days, 54, will take command as Naval Station Norfolk’s 51st commanding officer in a change of command ceremony Friday.

Days will relieve Capt. David Dees, who will then assume duties as the chief of staff for commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

It is not lost on her that few decades ago, there were few positions in the Navy available for a Black person. Her dedication to the military dates back her the service of her father, George Hanks.

I hope this is allowed in LBN since it isn't a national source. But I think the implications of this are certainly of great importance to our country. The largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, has it's first ever Black, female CO. I know there are plenty of people here that have issues/problems with the US military, and no doubt there are very valid concerns. But it makes me very happy to see this, and I wish Capt. Days a very successful command! Congratulations!

I served on a tin can out of Norfolk in the 60's, the Sampson, DDG-10. This naive kid from Oregon was intimidated by the huge base, the big ships and the firepower. Didn't know much about the chain of command.

but we followed the UCMJ to the letter. Discipline was really tight, lots of inspections, but we had a tight crew and a common purpose.

for allowing sexual or physical harassment women (usually officers) at work, at naval aviation events (Tailhook), etc.

A friend of mine was at Tailhook and a young pilot tried to mess with her. She was fit and had been weight training. She slammed him against the wall, aggressively grabbed his package, and asked him if that was what he was looking for. On another occasion her CO physically assaulted her. She was able to get proof of his harassment and transferred out of his command.

Personally, I think the good old boys were angry about their "club" being infiltrated by women.
