TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - A shelter-in-place order was extended Wednesday morning, Feb. 15, to include a 3-mile radius around the scene of a deadly crash and hazmat spill on Interstate 10.
The incident between Kolb and Rita roads forced evacuations in the area on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Shortly after the shelter-in-place order was extended, the Vail School District announced that all its schools would be closed Wednesday.
Arizona DPS confirmed a truck carrying liquid nitric acid crashed in the median around 2:40 p.m. and the driver was killed.

I figured that would be over by now. not to be selfish, but I have an appointment at Grant and I 10 tomorrow. wonder if detour will still be going.

(111,339 posts)It will be a while before residual acid is offloaded and the spill neutralized.
My advice is to leave very, very early. I-10 is a major trucking route so it will still be jammed with traffic.
Sad news about the driver, I hope he had a dashcam that might show what caused him to go off the road.

(55,019 posts)if he was westbound he had already made it past the worst spots between Benson and Tucson, but so far they haven't said what it might have been. I think they must be routing traffic through Vail, but also wind direction should change today. who knows?
don't want to miss this appointment as I am finally getting a PICC line pulled.
Lots of pileups down there when the wind picks up dust and visibility drops to zero. A dsshcam would tell the story.
It's just so sad that he died.

(55,019 posts)out around Marana and west, and near San Simon and the NM border are the worst spots. plus it rained the day before so wind or some human/traffic error is my guess.

(19,204 posts)is a tanker full of glycerine to crash closely by. 😳

(6,017 posts)Also too unrealistic, making the "joke" too much of a stretch. To make nitroglycerin, a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid is needed as well as sodium bicarbonate or similar, and a specific, careful procedure followed. It's not some Coyote & Road Runner cartoon event that can happen by accident.
But mostly just not funny. I've known hazardous materials truck drivers.
