TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) wants bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other members of the Florida executive cabinet or legislature to register with the state or face fines.
..................
In the bill, Brodeur wrote that those who write an article, a story, or a series of stories, about the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the Legislature, and receives or will receive payment for doing so, must register with state offices within five days after the publication of an article that mentions an elected state official.
If another blog post is added to a blog, the blogger would then be required to submit monthly reports on the 10th of each month with the appropriate state office. They would not have to submit a report on months when no content is published.
For blog posts that concern an elected member of the legislature or an officer of the executive branch, monthly reports must disclose the amount of compensation received for the coverage, rounded to the nearest $10 value......................................

(58,785 posts)You know, "corporatists" REALLY don't like this kind of stuff. Profitable decisionmaking requires stable, predictable conditions. And it absolutely requires protection from government extremism. They're all taking note of the attacks on Disney these days.
Using corporate as an all-purpose swear word resembles how the Republicans use liberal. Use it too often, and it loses its meaning other than its bad and we dont like it.

(22,794 posts)criticism of officials and elected politicians a crime? It cannot be allowed to stand given our 1st Amendment protections. I'm hoping DeSantis has gone too far out on that fascist limb and will come crashing down in the end. Attacking private companies like Disney for their free speech, censoring school library books, attacking equality for LGBTQ people. Our system will eventually reject these reprobates like a pack of enraged white blood cells encountering a disease vector in the bloodstream.

(303 posts)If Brodeur's bill passes, does anyone doubt DeathSentence will sign it into law? It will certainly be challenged, but it's appalling to think this can happen in the US. Let's kick Florida out of the Union. And support bloggers who defy the rule if it passes.

(38,421 posts).....(from Library of Congress, exact words)..............First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

(36,048 posts)Then, of course, only the wealthy will have totally free speech. And corporations. This has already existed.
This is what "law in commerce" is; this is what it's done by slowly overtaking constitutionally protected human rights.
The way out through court rulings is one thing. Courts' enforcement of their rulings is a whole 'nother thing.
Democracy dies the more that courts fail to enforce rule of law, because of the pathological powers of corporate commerce that result in loss, harm and damage to humans as part of their "nothing personal, just business" inhumanity.

... the Guv waited until he was off in Michigan before they did this.
Might not affect Beau, though. Does the bill cover video blogs?
On edit: he has. He was suitably salty. Conclusion: "Screw you, Ron RonDeSantis. Consider this my registration. Come and get me.

That would seem to be interstate trade in addition to a violation of the 1a.

(9,888 posts)How would this even work? I live in PA. Florida state law enforcement can't just roam the country picking up unregistered bloggers. And their subpoena would be no good here. Pretty feeble, if you ask me.
