Attorney General Garland makes surprise visit to Ukraine

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Merrick Garland made an unannounced trip to Ukraine on Friday, a Department of Justice official said.

Garland visited the city of Lviv, the largest city in the western part of the country, at the invitation of Ukraine's prosecutor general to join President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and international partners at the “United for Justice Conference," the DOJ official said.

The attorney general held several meetings and "reaffirmed our determination to hold Russia accountable for crimes committed in its unjust and unprovoked invasion against its sovereign neighbor," the official added.

The trip was not previously announced for security reasons and it's unclear how Garland entered and exited Ukraine and how long he was there. Garland also made a surprise visit to the country in June 2022, just a few months after the war began.

Why does Garland need to go to Ukraine? Is something else happening under the radar?

Ok, 2 questions.

perhaps from what is now Ukrainian land. There is a long history of high-level US officials whose ancestors came from an area to put in an appearance when there are major problems in that area. That might be reason enough.

Thank you. So many present-day Americans with Ukrainian roots. The US really is a melting pot, and I'm sure the white supremacists/Nazis and Fascists here hate it. Tough shit.

I fully expected to see at least one "but what about" post in response. It didn't matter what the OP was about.

And I wasn't disappointed. I am sure there will be more.

crow. My best guess is to serve it like doves or quail, except that crows are much larger and probably a lot tougher.

Might as well take some time off from not holding anyone accountable over here to meander around over there mumbling "no one is above the law". I just hope he didn't get in the way. Ukraine is a little busy at the moment.

to the International Criminal Court, the probable outcome will be the establishment of a special tribunal like at Nuremberg. At least, that's part of the current discussion.
