Arkansas Gov. Sanders signs law loosening child labor protections

Source: Washington Post/By Jacob Bogage

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) signed into law this week legislation that rolls back significant portions of the state’s child labor protections.

The law eliminates requirements for the state to verify the age of children younger than 16 before they can take a job.

Sanders believes the provision was “burdensome and obsolete,” spokeswoman Alexa Henning said in an emailed statement. Remaining state and federal regulations are still in effect, she said. Sanders signed the Republican-backed bill on Tuesday.

Federal officials have pledged to crack down on child labor law offenses after regulators discovered hundreds of violations in meatpacking plants and after press reports emerged of children working in hazardous occupations around the country.

She's looking to become the GOP's biggest asshole.

Update: I went on the Arkansas state home page to try and find a press release and it doesn't look like it's there yet.

in chicken plants.

Many of these kids entered the country alone and are in the custody of "sponsors" who are only interested in putting them to work. Their parents are not here to file a lawsuit. The only protection these kids have is child labor laws. Fortunately, after the New York Times story broke, the feds are all over this.

Fuck?!?! “Outdated and burdensome” to have to verify the age of a child before they can take a job? What next? 12 year olds working in construction? Then 5 year olds back in the mines?

Go screw yourself, Sarah Huckafuck.

Tyson headquarters is here in my town in Arkansas. They have long been notorious for employing undocumented immigrants. Since they the right has been relentlessly demonizing them it's no wonder they want to be able to rely upon child labor more instead.

An injured young mill worker. Giles Edmund Newsom, photographed on October 23, 1912.

Giles was injured while working in Sanders Spinning Mill in Bessemer City, North Carolina, on August 21st, 1912. A piece of machinery fell on his foot, mashing his toe. This caused him to fall onto a spinning machine and his hand went into unprotected gearing, crushing and tearing out two fingers.

He told the investigating attorney that he was 11 years old when it happened. He and his younger brother worked in the mill several months before the accident.

Now they want child labor. Arkansas is a third world state.

Report ranks Arkansas as one of the ten worst economies in the U.S.

Arkansas receives an overall ranking of 44th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia in The Commonwealth Fund’s recently released 2022 Scorecard on State Health System Performance.

WalletHub released a study showing Arkansas ranks 47th as an educated state against the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The near-bottom ranking put it above only Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia.

She might want to rethink this, if only because of bad press. Or maybe she doesn't care about that. Or think about the consequences to her own family. If your teachers and doctors are leaving the state, how do you properly raise your own children?
