MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) The grief is still suffocating, the anger still visceral, President Joe Biden said Tuesday, in this suburban Los Angeles community where a gunman stormed a dance hall and killed 11 in January. He announced fresh federal measures to curb gun violence but emotionally declared there must be more.
Do something. Do something big, he implored. Im determined to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, Biden told the families of some of the victims who were in the audience for his remarks, along with the 26-year-old who wrestled the semiautomatic pistol away from the gunman.
Bidens rhetoric has grown ever stronger about guns he routinely calls for banning assault weapons in pushing a gun-control platform even tougher than during the Obama administration when he was vice president. He has been emboldened by the midterm elections when his regular talk of gun control didnt result in massive Democratic losses, and hes expected to continue to argue for strong changes as he moves toward a 2024 reelection run, his aides say.
We remember and mourn today, Biden said in Monterey Park. But Im here with you today to act. The president told the crowd hed signed an executive order aimed at stiffening background checks to buy guns, promoting more secure firearms storage and ensuring law enforcement agencies get more out of a bipartisan gun control law enacted last summer.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) -- President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Tuesday aiming at increasing background checks to buy guns, promoting more secure firearms storage and ensuring U.S. law enforcement agencies get more out of a bipartisan gun control law enacted last summer.
The Democratic president was to address his latest efforts to curb gun violence in a speech in this suburban Los Angeles community, where a gunman stormed a dance hall and shot 20 people, killing 11, following a Lunar New Year celebration in January. He was also meeting with families of victims and with first responders from that day.
Biden's rhetoric has grown ever stronger about guns -- he routinely calls for banning assault weapons -- in pushing a vocal gun-control platform even tougher than during the Obama administration when he was vice president. He has been emboldened by the midterm electiions when his regular talk of gun control didn't result in massive losses, and he's expected to continue to argue for strong changes as he inches toward a 2024 reelection run, his aides say.
Biden was greeted at the Los Angeles airport Tuesday by Brandon Tsay, the 26-year-old who wrestled the semiautomatic pistol away from the gunman in Monterey Park. The two shook hands; Biden had invited Tsay to his State of the Union address in January where he praised the young man's heroism.

The Democratic president was set to address his latest efforts to curb gun violence in a speech from Monterey Park, California. In January, a gunman stormed a dance hall in the community near Los Angeles and shot 20 people, killing 11, following a Lunar New Year celebration. He's also scheduled to meet with families of the victims and first responders from that day.
Biden's rhetoric has only grown stronger around guns -- he routinely calls for banning so-called assault weapons in his speeches -- and Democrats didn't push such a vocal gun-control platform even during the Obama administration, when Biden was vice president. But Biden has been emboldened by the midterms after his regular talk of gun control didn't result in massive losses, and he's expected to continue to push for strong changes as he inches toward a 2024 run, his aides say.
Biden invited Brandon Tsay, the 26-year-old who wrestled the semi-automatic pistol away from the gunman in Monterey Park, to his State of the Union address and praised the young man's heroism. "He saved lives. It's time we do the same as well," Biden said in his speech to Congress. "Ban assault weapons once and for all."

(205,320 posts)But it escalated overnight and then snowed hard all day. We heard beforehand that nearby Glens Falls was declaring a state of emergency, all schools were closed as were my doctor's offices, they sent out a notice saying they didn't want to endanger employees or patients. And it's wet and heavy snow, the kind that brings trees down. We didn't lose power here, but the newspaper announced local "warming stations" for those who did. And this area only got "moderate" snowfall, further south in the Albany area and points west were "extreme.' Just looked out and it's no longer snowing and it's a winter wonderland out there, quite pretty if you don't have to go out in it. I have an appointment at 3 today, I'll see if that's still on. At least the road is plowed - and we're a side road off of a side road, so that's good news. And here we were more than ready for Spring. *sigh*

(128,959 posts)on the long range ones. My weather buddies had dubbed it "The Ides of March" storm.
The European model (ECMWF) had this for it a week ago -
It "missed" in terms of any snow down here in SE PA verifying. I had some light snow but mainly flurries on and off yesterday, with a few that briefly stuck to colder surfaces before melting because the temps never hit or went below freezing. But it and the other global models nailed up where you are and into western MA & CT!
Glad you escaped the worst of it and especially this time of year because that snow is so wet and heavy!

(205,320 posts)I'm in the Northeast, which would be the dark purple area. It was no picnic here, but those that were hit the worst were in the orange part, Albany and points west. At least it's supposed to be in the higher 30s and up to 40 in the next couple of days, but snow like this takes ages to melt - and it had just started to be scary driving - since the snowbanks had gotten high enough that it was treacherous to pull out of a side street or a parking lot. I can remember it happening earlier in previous yeats - when I finally stuck to streets with traffic lights rather than take chances!

(128,959 posts)those images I posted were from model output that was done on March 9th! Will have to give it a few days to get the final totals.
I just felt ugh for you guys up there - especially since it is getting late in the season and the "official" start of spring (equinox) is less than a week away!
Me and my sisters did get to the Philadelphia Flower Show this past Saturday (we skipped the last 2 years when they had it outdoors due to the pandemic and literally had last gone a week before everything shut down in 2020 right at the start of the pandemic). Am still trying to recover from what me and my sisters dub the death-walk in the middle of those crowds who crawl along and then suddenly stop mid-aisle and gawk and then maybe start moving again (which after awhile, jams up the leg/hip joints and muscles..lol).
