U.S. European Command has released dramatic declassified video taken by the MQ-9 Reaper drone that shows the moment that a Russian Su-27 fighter jet collided with it earlier this week after attempting to spray the drone with jet fuel.
The video from Tuesday morning was taken from a camera on the drone's underside and shows two different passes taken by the jets to spray the drone, the second one being the collision with the propeller at the rear of the drone, which is visible in the footage.
Communications were lost with the drone as the image can be seen pixelating into color bars. EUCOM also confirmed that communications with the drone were down for a minute and that the released video was edited for time.
When the video feed resumed, one of the propeller blades is seen damaged from the collision with the Russian fighter.

(2,502 posts)They wanted to bring it down. Probably want to collect it and send it to Iran to reverse engineer

(8,739 posts)So your telling me Russia lied about dumping fuel and instigating the whole thing destroying a multimillion dollar drone over international waters.
Who woulda thunk it. Russia lies more than trump and GQP and Fox. Surprise surprise surprise as Gomer would say.

The US mQ-9 Reaper drone has been found near Sevastopol' at a depth of about 900 meters, ForPost has been told by its source close to the RF Defense Ministry familiar with the details of the operation.
The Russian naval fleet remains on patrol in the crash area of the military military intelligence device. "A submersible was lowered to the sea bottom and found the MQ-9 Reaper at a depth o about 850-900 meters. The deep-water branch of the "South Stream" gas pipline passes not far from this zone," the ForPost correspondent said.

Don't know if the timestamp is local to the ForPost correspondent, Moscow, or adjusted to my time zone, CDST.
No claim made by me as to reliability. But they have that tech and presumably have it in one of there few actual large military bases. Esp. since it would have been useful in checking the Kerch' bridge for damage.

(29,201 posts)Russia's defence ministry says its fighter jets did not come into contact with a US drone that crashed into the Black Sea, saying instead that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed due to sharp manoeuvring.

I'm also surprised that the Russian jet did not sustain damage.

It would have had to.

The US says that one of the Russian Su-27 fighter jets that took part in an incident with the American MQ-9 UAV in the Black Sea was damaged.
Source: Patrick Ryder, the spokesperson for the Pentagon, at a briefing on Tuesday, reported by European Pravda
Quote: "We continue to estimate what exactly happened. But I believe, considering the actions of Russian pilots, it was dangerous and unprofessional, and their actions speak for themselves. As per our information, fighter jets dropped fuel on our UAV and went so close to it that it damaged the MQ-9s propeller. "
"As per our evaluations, the Russian aircraft was damaged, too. We know it managed to land I will not say where exactly, but it demonstrates the dangerous and unprofessional work of these pilots."

Oh sorry our drone exploded right in front of you. Must have malfunctioned.

(45,442 posts)but the whole drone doesn't explode. That's an interesting idea though.

(4,552 posts)What if the control of the drone is lost? Wouldn't we want to blow it up in the air.
I do not know much about them though and I bet the military is not going to tell me.
IronLionZion
(45,442 posts)but it would be an interesting option.
When a stealth helicopter crashed in the Bin Laden raid, Seals had to manually blow it up. An automatic option might be available now.

(111,256 posts)I looked up the MQ-9 when al Zawahiri got whacked, since this is most likely what got him.
There are other weapons capable drones, good ones from Turkey and Australia, the latter having a huge range.
The destruction of the disk would not only destroy any sensitive surveillance, it would also destroy the operating system. Its chip is useless without that.

(10,847 posts)Surveillance aircraft have video going all the time.
Fighter planes generally just have gun cameras that operate when they fire their guns but since they used missiles there'd be no footage.

(2,495 posts)Hence why dumb Ivan couldn't maneuver out of the drone's way. Also, it looks like american aircraft are also dangerous when they are stationary. Another example was the Chinese J-7 that crashed to the ground after colliding with a US Navy EP-3.
