Romney Claims He Lost Because of Obama "Gifts"

Source: New York Times

A week after losing the presidential election to President Obama, Mitt Romney blamed his overwhelming electoral loss on what he said were big “gifts” that the president had bestowed on loyal Democratic constituencies — including young voters, African-Americans and Hispanics.

In a conference call on Wednesday afternoon with his national finance committee, Mr. Romney said that the president had followed the “old playbook” of wooing specific interest groups — “especially the African-American community, the Hispanic community and young people,” Mr. Romney explained — with targeted gifts and initiatives.

well he is an out and out racist. All the dog whistles of free stuff, phones ect during campaign. His whole campaign was geared to white low information voters, not minorities at all in any respect. His religion has racist doctrine still adhered to even though in 1979 they allowed that black people had souls and could go heaven, thank kolob! I'd be willing to bet that the reason they changed this doctrine is because they were facing lawsuits. Please, not a racist per se???? Right. You are entitled. Oopps I'm sorry I used that entitlement word that only the lazy 47% expect.

The federal government was threatening to take away the mormons tax exempt status. One vision from god later, and black's can hold the priesthood. Walter Lippmann said that public minds should be herded like cows which Romney endorses with his Romnesia and his view on the 47% tape that he liked the way his Chinese women worker slaves making $1.35/hr working 80 hours a week were grateful for their work.

And remember he had a whole room of like-minded millionaires that were supporting his views on the 47% tape. Plutocrats like Romney and the Koch Brothers truly believe they deserve everything and ordinary people deserve no more than cows get and these people fund the GOP.

overused??? Go to utube and bring up Obama comments during the election season. See if you think the nword is overused in this country. See if dog whistle politics was not overused? There is a large group of RACISTS in this country and thank god I know where most are now because of this election and the color of our POTUS. This and a few other sites are the only savings grace for me in making the judgement that there still are reasonable, rational people out there with a different skin color than most minorities. Women of all racial persuasions saw mittshit for the person he is and that contributed in a large way toward the victory we had, so, when and if our group is overwhelmed with the racial hate out there in the land of the free and home of the brave I hope I'll be dead and gone. Mittshit tried to stir the melting pot to see if the "cream" would rise to the top, but this time the mix held. Next time? Who knows.

107. I'm not sure the GOP was ever "fairly decent"
Thu Nov 15, 2012, 10:26 AM
Nov 2012

at least not since Reconstruction.

Before the Bush's and Reagan you had Nixon, whose "Southern strategy" appealed directly to white racists, who used the IRS to harass political opponents, who prolonged the Vietnam war and invaded two other countries (Laos, Cambodia), who overthrew the democratically elected government of Chile, who started "the war on drugs," etc. etc.

Before Nixon we had Eisenhower, who was silent in the face of McCarthyism (Joseph McCarthy R-Wisconsin), who overthrew the democratically elected governments of Guatemala and Iran, leading to brutal dictatorships in both nations, planned the Bay of Pigs, hugely accelerated the arms race (it was only at the END of his term did he warn us about the military-industrial complex he did so much to create), and appointed a red-baiting sociopath (Richard Nixon) to be his vice president.

Before Eisenhower was Dewey, who ran campaigns in 1944 and 1948 that accused Democrats of trying to overthrow American democracy and replace it with communism--who in 1944 ran a campaign that accused FDR of wanting to establish a monarchy, criticised his war leadership, etc. Among the GOP's strongest supporters back then were folks like the Jew-baiting, race-hating Father Coughlin, the Rush Limbaugh of his time.

Before Dewey we had Harding-Coolidge-Hoover. Hoover was a fairly decent businessman who was clueless about dealing with the depression--but I'll admit he was a humanitarian (did great things relieving hunger in Europe post WWI). Coolidge made his reputation as a union busting pro-business hack ("The business of America is business&quot . Harding was so corrupt ("Teapot Dome&quot he would probably have been impeached if he hadn't died in office.

Even TR--who was progressive in some respects--was a believer in eugenics, imperialism and "the white man's burden" and waged a brutal counter-insurgency to keep control of the Philippines after we took that region from Spain.

Andrew Johnson WAS impeached--for defying progressive Republicans in Congress and pandering to the sensibilities of the southern racist oligarchy who launched the Civil War.

I'm not saying Democratic history was all roses--especially not the southern wing of the party up until the 1970s--but the GOP record for the most part is not what I would call "fairly decent." I WOULD be willing to say that until recently it had managed to keep its worst elements from completely dominating its establishment and national agenda, but that's about as far as I'd be willing to go.

I guess all things are relative. And so I would agree that, relatively speaking, this GOP is the worst it's been since, say, 1932.

PS: I left out Reagan and the Bushes, figuring their administrations were all recent enough not to need any elaboration here.

The executive order to give status to "Dreamers" was aimed at the Hispanic community, and it worked.

Pell Grants and lower interest on student loans help middle-income young people. I'm okay with that.

Not sure what he think Obama did for our (black) community.

Romney can call it however he wants. The bottom line is that he lost. And that huge donations from fat cats Lost.

And that makes me very happy.

"Gifts" are stock dividends that the rich receive just for sitting on their butts.

These assholes are motivated by the "what's in it for me", "least work for the most reward" mentality.

Obama voters just want a fair country where they have shot at success in exchange for their hard work.

But apparently the 47% wasn't a gaffe...it's what he truly believes.

For the record, I think Obama probably could have won even without Romney's gaffes, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Even though I think he deserved re-election, the narrative that took hold was that he didn't. I hate the way the post-election spin has been all about what Romney did wrong and not about the fact that maybe, just maybe, the majority of Americans thought the president deserved another four years.

That is a pretty extreme statement. I know several people at my school who voted for Romney and I don't consider any of them racist. Like it or not, some people do legitimately believe in unregulated markets and believe that the right to keep more of your paycheck is more important than maintaining a social safety net. Obviously, I believe in the social safety net or I wouldn't be here. But there are legitimate arguments on the other side and we don't do anyone any favors by writing off all or "most" of the people who don't agree with us as racist or stupid.

Based on your anecdotal evidence, not much racism. Based on my anecdotal evidence, lots. Truth is in the middle of, course, so I'm willing to concede "Many of his votes"

Bottom line, not many voted for HIM, they voted against something else.

But I am not prepared to say that Obama's race was the reason most people opposed him. Some, sure, but many of them wouldn't have voted Democratic anyway.

Interestingly, in the 2008 exit poll, people who said the race of the candidate was a factor in their vote were actually more likely to have voted for Obama than those who said it was not a factor. Of course, people for whom it was a negative factor were probably less likely to say so, but it was surprising how many people said it was a positive factor.

Romney lost Bc of Obama's gift of loving all Americans, of fighting for a fair chance for everyone, of his ability to see beyond skin color, of forgiving those who hate him and especially of not lowering hmself to their juvenile level.
Apologies to those who texted similiar posts. Just had to make this point.

Edited to add: don't forget the gift so my daughter can go to college wo acquiring insurmountable debt she would never be able to pay off. And could I not go on and on and on.

95. To Be Credible Romney Must Identify What Those "Gifts" Were
Wed Nov 14, 2012, 10:50 PM
Nov 2012

One guess would be the extension of low interest loans for college students. But those have been around for a long time. Another would be the executive order on part of the Dream Act but George W. Bush was also for that. Besides, a lot of Republicans have changed their tune on that since the election. Maybe it was bailing out the auto industry. But Romney claimed that Obama stole his plan. I'm looking for what those gifts are that Romney is so upset with but I'm coming up blank. The term that comes to mind to explain Romney here is "sore loser".

And for what it's worth, I would like to point out that grad students got no gifts. In fact, I got an unpleasant surprise this year when I looked at my student loans and discovered that the $8,500 subsidized Stafford loan had been completely eliminated for grad students.

Needless to say I still voted for Obama.

And I didn't want to burn one of those on this because I could pretty much guess what he was talking about if he indeed listed the "gifts".

Turns out my anticipation was pretty darn good. And his points were pretty darn weak as he repeated his 47% argument. So much for learning lessons.

108. Personally, I found this even more offensive than the 47% comment.
Thu Nov 15, 2012, 11:03 AM
Nov 2012

The 47% comment was very revealing, but I didn't feel personally insulted by it because I pay income taxes. Moreover, the statement was obviously false: clearly, many people who don't pay income taxes vote Republican, and many people who vote Democratic pay income taxes.

The statement about gifts, on the other hand, I found extremely offensive. I volunteered for the Obama campaign. I made more than a thousand calls and knocked on more than 300 doors. I donated as much as I could afford, and I took an unpaid day to get out the vote on election day. I got no gifts in return, other than the pleasure of seeing the President re-elected, nor did I expect any. In fact, my husband and I together are earning enough this year to be in the income tax bracket that will have its tax rate increased. I find the suggestion that Obama won essentially by bribing people extremely insulting on a personal level.

If anything, Romney wooed his wealthy voters with promises of major tax breaks if he got elected. If anyone was offering "gifts", it was Romney.

I shudder to think that this guy could have been president today.
