Donald Trump Is Indicted in New York: Live Updates

Source: New York Times
A Manhattan grand jury indicted Donald J. Trump on Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star, according to people with knowledge of the matter, a historic development that will shake up the 2024 presidential race and forever mark him as the nations first former president to face criminal charges.
On Thursday evening, after news of the charges had been widely reported, the district attorneys office confirmed that Mr. Trump had been indicted and that prosecutors had contacted Mr. Trumps attorney to coordinate his surrender to authorities in Manhattan. Mr. Trump is likely to turn himself in on Tuesday, at which point the former president will be photographed and fingerprinted in the bowels of a New York State courthouse, with Secret Service agents in tow. He will then be arraigned, at which point the specific charges will be unsealed.
Mr. Trump faces more than two dozen counts, according to two people familiar with the matter. Mr. Trump has for decades avoided criminal charges despite persistent scrutiny and repeated investigations, creating an aura of legal invincibility that the indictment now threatens to puncture.
But unlike the investigations that arose from his time in the White House which examined his strong-arm tactics on the international stage, his attempts to overturn the election and his summoning of a mob to the steps of the U.S. Capitol this case is built around a tawdry episode that predates Mr. Trumps presidency. The reality star turned presidential candidate who shocked the political establishment by winning the White House now faces a reckoning for a hush-money payment that buried a sex scandal in the final days of the 2016 campaign.

"Jabberwocky"
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

(205,467 posts)He talked a lot about Civil Rights, how George Wallace managed to remain in power and when the name Viola Liuzzo brought up here, thanks to him, I knew exactly who she was. Though I can't say I remember learning about Watergate in school, think I was home for summer vacation, too, though I do remember that last helicopter wave. And I remember the Weekly Reader, too, but by that point I was away at school, I went to boarding school starting junior high school year and that was pretty much a news blackout. We didn't have cell phones in those days, or even access to TV.

(129,085 posts)it wasn't 24/7 and very little cable (let alone any news channels on cable). I remember my cousins had cable back in the early '70s (they lived in NH with terrible reception for Boston stations so were wired with cable) and that was the first time I saw an all-cartoon channel. But news wise, it was ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS (plus any local indie stations).

(205,467 posts)So I had access to TV for my last year in college. Nobody else that I knew did. But you're right, there wasn't "breaking news" in those days. I could catch up on General Hospital and watched The Untouchables in syndication - and the news I watched was from the local Utica, NY station. The local news anchor was a very sharp woman, Donna Hanover (better known now as Rudy Giuliani's ex-wife!).

My fave show '73 - '74 -
Was a Bill Bixby fan and always wanted a white Corvette until I found out how much they were. My uncle still teases me about that.

(205,467 posts)Nobody else had a TV - and the only one I knew who had anything to do with computers (there was apparently one in the college library) was one of my suitemates who was a math major and she often had "computer duty" on weekends. As for cars, I was away at school (or summer camp) by the time I was old enough to drive. I did take drivers' ed my junior year in HS, but I had no opportunity to practice so I had to take it again in my 20s - and the teacher was my 9th grade Social Studies teacher, so he knew me!
And I already mentioned my favorite show - they showed it in syndication weeknights on the local station - and my only crush was the star. And I once won a local TV news contest since I knew the actor who played Frank Nitti.

(129,085 posts)I know that was syndicated here maybe caught it a few episodes. Ironically, HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" covered that period of history with the "prohees".
And congrats on that "win" back then. I remember entering contests like that (mainly radio ones where you had to be the "x" numbered caller answering the trivia).

(413 posts)Happy Days Are Here Again. Threw out the dinner plans in favor of some good takeout. At the grocery store, I kept on singing it under my breath - got a very odd look from a guy in the freezer section. This news made my day. The ketchup's gonna hit the wall tonight!
And I keep remembering he brought it all on himself. As a tacky two-bit mobbed-up New York real estate guy with a tv show and enough money for a lot of lawyers, he was just not worth going after. Then he had to run for President because Obama committed the crime of Mocking While Black. He made himself worth going after.
And because he's too stupid to understand he can't get away with the same stuff anymore, he never even tried very hard to hide anything. He sucks at crime'ing, which is ironic given how much experience he's had. It's not like the evidence was hard to find. His chief defense is still "Yea, so? Whaddya think you're going to do about it? I can do anything I want, I can take anything I want. If I want it, it's mine. Because I say so."
And he's cheap. By now, nobody sane believes he's going to pay their legal fees, pardon them or do anything but trash them once their immediate usefulness is ended. Because of this, there are very few rats remaining on the ship already and he's going to lose the rest. The entire case is about his using money that he was given by people to do other things with. None of this account was his personal piggybank. It's fraud and, given the amount of money that's likely involved, it's felony level. It just happened to be Stormy Daniels; the case would be the same if he'd taken the same amount of money from the same source and bought Melania a ring. (As if!) If he'd just used his own goddamned money, this wouldn't even be a case. But he's cheap. Stupid and cheap.
There isn't a violin tiny enough and there's not enough popcorn and bubbly. But I'll make do.
Happy Days Are Here Again!

(5,401 posts)This statement is incorrect. It should read:
"Mr Trump is a lifelong criminal who stumbled into the POTUS job with some help from friends and now faces criminal charges."
I think that gets the emphasis in the right place.
How about just saying . . .
"Mr. Trump will be facing criminal charges."?
Any dignity and validity bestowed on Trump with the title of 'former president' faded long ago, if it ever existed at all.
Hopefully more to come, hopefully blocking any chances he has of making a comeback.

(922 posts)While it is a great step, I don't think it is enough. Granted, it is for something different, but I don't understand why he hasn't been charged with sedition, treason, incitement to terrorism and other changes. He is still a dangerous man and he is inciting his base to commit terrorism. Even if he is in prison, he could still be dangerous. Even in prison gang leaders can still do business, even if by indirect means. Remember, like a cult leader, there are a lot of people who will do anything to support him, even by violent means. We have to be ready for potentially right-wing terrorism. His followers consider him a political prisoner. Now we all know that isn't true, but these are not sane people.

(4,741 posts)AFAIK, that matter would be covered by a federal grand jury, and they'll reach a conclusion on their schedule, no one else's.
We have no control over that grand jury, so getting all worked up about it would be like getting mad that we can't make the sun rise in the west. Some things, you just can't change. The only thing you can change is your perspective.
I think AA is a scam, but I do think the one thing they got right was the idea that we change what we can and accept what we can't. I call on it for stuff like this--things that i wish would happen, but that I have no power to control. Saves me a lot of aggravation to face reality that way, but YMMV.

(922 posts)Look, I'm not saying the indictments are bad. They are a great first step. I am also aware that things do take time and that we have don't have control of it, but I guarantee you that if you or I did the same thing that Trump is accused of or should have been accused of, would it have taken that long? Not a chance. Even once he is actually in court, how likely is it that he will be a flight risk or get out on bond? My point is, the whole justice system is not equal in the slightest, it highly favors the rich, and I know it will not be changed anytime soon, because it has been corrupted.
I hope I am wrong on this, but assuming he does get convicted, I think it will go all the way to the US Supreme Court, and I have no trust that they will get it right. Again, I am just going based on what I have seen. If somehow the conviction isn't overturned on appeal, assuming the trial goes and then he is found guilty, I would be impressed. Remember, he is banking on this dragging on and by the time the election comes, it will be corrupted enough where it favors him and he will seek vengeance against his enemies. But again, until he is actually on trial and convicted, and put in jail, he is still a dangerous man, not to mention his most rabid followers.

Sounds like each of these investigations is uncovering strong evidence toward other charges.
Let's hope he is charged for each & every crime he's commited. Oh wait, there's not enough time in the world for that many indictments.
