Harlan Crow on buying house of Justice Clarence Thomas' mother: 'I don't see the foot fault'

Source: CNN

Harlan Crow, the GOP megadonor and real estate magnate who paid for luxury travel for Clarence Thomas, defended his relationship with the Supreme Court justice in an extensive interview with The Atlantic, reiterating he has never discussed cases before the court with Thomas.

“I have never, nor would I ever, think about talking about matters that relate to the judiciary with Justice Clarence Thomas,” Crow said in the interview. Crow said they talk about things that “friends talk about.”

In a follow-up email to the magazine, however, Crow added that, “It’s not like we haven’t talked about work-related issues,” while adding that the conversations were casual and unrelated to jurisprudence.

“It’s not realistic for two people to be friends and not talk about their jobs from time to time,” the magazine quotes Crow as saying. But Crow said it would be “wrong” to talk to him about Supreme Court cases. “From my point of view, that is off limits. He and I don’t go there.”

We were told at work that the appearance is the thing itself. For example, a manager sells Avon to people reporting to her. These people want to buy the Avon and insist there's no pressure to buy it, and the manager insists she doesn't favor the ones that buy it, but that doesn't matter. There may be unspoken and even unconscious prejudices at work in this situation, and the appearance smells corrupt to a non-customer employee when they are disciplined, and to a superior when the customer employees are praised.

We are given classes on this…YEARLY. It is absolutely mandatory that we take these, and most of us aren’t even in a position to be affected by or effect any such corruption.

On edit: How is it that nurses, etc., are subjected to such training and monitoring? Yet people who are in positions to be affected by the mere appearance of corruption (much less actually be corrupt like Clarence “Uncle Slappy” Thomas) are not, nor are expected to uphold such minimum standards? This is wrong on ALL levels.

Apparently there’s a whole bunch of us DUers who have had to live with security clearances, and mandatory training classes like yours. Hell, my 76 y.o. husband who works from home and does all his meetings via his computer is required to take a yearly class on sexual harassment (there’s a test at the end, too) .

But the SCOTUS and their friends? We must be joking.

This leaves a really bitter taste in my mouth.

Holy Cow (Harlan Crow), avid collector of Nazi memorabilia, is not a guy who would befriend a black man if there wasn't a financial benefit to the relationship..

..statement I've heard -- hey while we're sitting on deck of my super taught taking in the sun and drinking margaritas ( something I'd be doing if I had a friend like Crow-- ha my friends and I go dutch at McDonald's ) as scenario continues Crow be like ..well Clarence that house in Timbuktu issue we talked about well... "need you to do me a favor though..." Is how Imagine any work related issues eg supreme court issues are discussed amongst the best of friends. Have to say... Thomas sure has a dedicated, loyal friend who will even pay for his mother's home..amazing!

It's not that Clarence is a poor man. So why didn't he just pay for his mother's house himself? Just an odd situation to place ones self one in-- when could have been avoided. His nephew's tuition paid by Crow as well. Have to say, something smells rotten in the state of Denmark! Net income for Clarence Thomas is:

.... the ball and Crow is safe on that but in the bribing a sitting member of the SCOTUS by buying
a property from that sitting member of the SCOTUS above the market rate, fixing up that home
along with 2 adjacent properties, and then letting the sitting member of the SCOTUS mother along
with family members/friends live those homes rent free that would be a bribe.
