South Carolina governor signs 6-week abortion bill into law

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster on Thursday signed a bill into law that will limit most abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

South Carolina now joins a list of Republican-led states that have championed sweeping abortion restrictions in the wake of last year’s Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. The entire US South, with the exception of Virginia, has moved to significantly curtail abortion rights in the past year.

“With my signature, the Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act is now law and will begin saving the lives of unborn children immediately,” McMaster, a Republican, said in a statement. “This is a great day for life in South Carolina, but the fight is not over. We stand ready to defend this legislation against any challenges and are confident we will succeed. The right to life must be preserved, and we will do everything we can to protect it.”

The law is effective immediately, but it already facing a legal challenge. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, along with the Greenville Women’s Clinic and two physician plaintiffs, has filed a suit in state court to try to stop the law.

It is a disgrace that republicans have been allowed to perpetuate a fraud.

They start counting the pregnancy from the first day of the last menstrual period, which happens about 2 weeks before conception. So, when they say the embryo has been developing for 6 weeks, it has actually been developing for only 4 weeks. There is no heartbeat at the point they have written into their law; there is actually no heart yet. It was understandable to make these mistakes several decades ago, but now we have more advanced instrumentation that has turned these mistakes into fraud.

non-viable and spontaneously aborted within what would have been just after a missed 6 week cycle. Now, I'd likely be investigated or charged for somehow causing harm to a much wanted healthy pregnancy that wasn't. My doctor, a highly regarded GP who was then chief of staff at a catholic hospital, after testing results and examination, undoubtedly knew the pregnancy was destined to fail but never said a word because, well, miracles happen and I was very excited. Sure enough, I was awakened in excruciating pain one Monday night while spouse was working night shifts and without a Kotex in the house. I'm sure DH got some strange looks at the all-night drug store at 3 A.M. It's the week I had a D&C on Tuesday morning described as "products of conception" and a tonsillectomy on Thursday. A previous tough-to-cure staph infection, not strep, that cleared after a strict 4 week rest - doctor ordered "DO NOTHING; NOT EVEN STEPS" eventually being blamed for the very early "miscarriage."

I do think it important to note Dr. F would also never prescribe "the pill" for me, not because he was catholic, but because I was a smoker. I now know of two friends who suffered blood clots. One lost a major portion of her bowel after being misdiagnosed in the ER twice and sent home. She needed to have outrageously expensive liquid IV nutrition for months and the other developed a pulmonary clot after taking birth control pills for many years following a sexual assault. Now there are so many formulations and devices, even customized combinations of hormones, that did not even exist in the early '70s. I remain red hot angry about the SCOTUS overturn of Roe v. Wade and threats to ban the abortion pill and the threats to ban contraception as well. My body; my choice!

We must all keep working to fight the dangerous ignorance that is making pregnancy even more painful and dangerous!

For this to be happening in this damn country in 2023 is so disgusting. I despise these fascist politicians. Forced motherhood when there are safe and legal options is nothing but female enslavement.

LEGAL ABORTION ON DEMAND AND WITHOUT APOLOGY NATIONWIDE & EVERYWHERE!
