Georgia probe of Trump broadens to activities in other states

Source: Washington Post

An Atlanta-area investigation of alleged election interference by former president Donald Trump and his allies has broadened to include activities in Washington, D.C., and several other states, according to two people with knowledge of the probe — a fresh sign that prosecutors may be building a sprawling case under Georgia’s racketeering laws.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis (D) launched an investigation more than two years ago to examine efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn his narrow 2020 defeat in Georgia. Along the way, she has signaled publicly that she may use Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute to allege that these efforts amounted to a far-reaching criminal scheme.

In recent days, Willis has sought information related to the Trump campaign hiring two firms to find voter fraud across the United States and then burying their findings when they did not find it, allegations that reach beyond Georgia’s borders, said the two individuals, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly about the investigation. At least one of the firms has been subpoenaed by Fulton County investigators.

Willis’s investigation is separate from the one at the Department of Justice being led by special counsel Jack Smith, but the two probes have covered some of the same ground. Willis has said she plans to make a charging decision this summer, and she has indicated that such an announcement could come in early August. She has faced stiff criticism from Republicans for investigating the former president, and the ever-widening scope suggests just how ambitious her plans may be.

https://www.texastribune.org/2020/12/08/texas-ken-paxton-election-georgia/

from the article:
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing four battleground states — Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — whose election results handed the White House to President-elect Joe Biden.

In the suit, he claims that pandemic-era changes to election procedures in those states violated federal law and asks the U.S. Supreme Court to block the states from voting in the Electoral College.

The last-minute bid, which legal experts have already characterized as a long shot, comes alongside dozens of similar attempts by President Donald Trump and his political allies. The majority of those lawsuits have already failed.

The gop will ask for anything just to throw something at the wall to see if it will stick.

The supreme court will probably leap at the chance to override the will of the people, again.

yeah we did but... "law" and what can count as "evidence" can be weird. I.e., they have to make sure that something like that wouldn't be automatically ruled "inadmissible" as "hearsay". There are exclusions for federal trials regarding what is and isn't "hearsay".

"....... has faced stiff criticism from Republicans for investigating the former president" is important to journalism. It's so important, in fact, that we get renotified at every turn so we remember how important, so that we understand the awe inspiring gravity of the journalism industry's ivory-towered POV.

There's NEVER any mention of the goddamned outrage most Americans swallow in dignity because the former guy still walks loose after fomenting an insurrection against the government because he couldn't handle being voted out of our Oval Office. Nor do they propose that the people are generally cynical about the system because they grow tired of a two-tiered justice system, a situational system exhibited by two-tiered procedures. One justice to accommodate the needs of the powerful/wealthy and another for those too poor to buy it.

But go ahead Washington Post. Keep reminding us about stiff criticism from Republicans. But please don't go on to explain that it's because there's a fighting chance they're going to see what actual justice is like for a change. That would be beyond your understanding of integrity.
