An opposition candidate in Ecuadors upcoming presidential election, Fernando Villavicencio, was assassinated at a campaign event Wednesday, President Guillermo Lasso confirmed on social media, vowing the killing will not go unpunished.
Villavicencio, 59, was shot dead at a Movimiento Construye political rally at a school north of the capital Quito, campaign team members Cristián Zurita and Rodrigo Figueroa told CNN.
He was gunned down 10 days before the first round of the presidential election was set to take place on August 20.

Villavicencio, a centrist, was one of eight candidates vying to replace disgraced President Guillermo Lasso, who was forced to call early elections after dissolving the National Assembly on May 17 - just days from a likely impeachment.Link to tweet

(21,670 posts)Lasso is a notorious crook, who made his first big fortune betting against the Ecuadorian sucre just before its sharp devaluation in 1999 - ahead of a forced dollarization he himself arranged as finance minister.
There was a massive recession and riots - but Lasso came out of it set for life.
He would've never been elected president - but for the same problem most Latin American countries share: a dominance of right-wing media.
Imagine having only Fox, OAN, and NewsMax to choose from for cable news - and the New York Post, Washington Times and Wall Street Journal for papers (and owned by the same three cable news outfits).
That's the media landscape in most Latin countries - though there is a significant progressive presence in some (under frequent legal assault, you can imagine).

The metaphors are definitely there.
And you're absolutely right: that's what she wants right here at home. She, and half the GOP.

(100,104 posts)They're being open about it, and it's got people killed already. And the violence will further escalate unless we start making examples of some folks. Particularly that fuck head who occupied the White House and stacked SCOTUS, and his enablers.

Nor should they forget the financing!
Republicans always seem to have plenty of that - and of the "dark" kind.

(21,670 posts)As bad as gun violence has gotten here, it's quite mild compared to most Latin American countries (with the exception of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia - and even they have their share).
The region had at least 130,000 murders last year - most of them gun-related.

(20,006 posts)Villavicencio was one of the most critical voices against corruption, especially during the government of former president Rafael Correa from 2007 to 2017, and was sentenced to 18 months in prison for defamation over statements made against the former president.
