Inmate stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times, charged with attempted murder, prosecutors say
Source: Associated Press
A federal inmate was charged Friday with attempted murder in the prison stabbing of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd.
John Turscak stabbed Chauvin 22 times in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, with an improvised knife, federal prosecutors said. Turscak, 52, told correctional officers he wouldve killed Chauvin had they not responded so quickly, prosecutors said.

(603 posts)unless the inmate specifically says they want gen. pop.
Good that they're charging him with attempted murder, that'll keep in prison for the rest of his life if he isn't already in for a life sentence.
I hope Mr. Chauvin fully recovers, although, how do you fully recover from that mentally, so he can experience the same fear that G. Floyd experienced on that fateful day.

Good point on Chauvin living the rest of his life in the same fear George Floyd felt in his last gasps.

And I can tell you that Oz was pretty close to the truth about conditions inside our prisons, whether state or federal.
My late Uncle Jimmy was a CO in PA. It's just hitting me now how peculiar it is that his grandfather (my great grandfather) was put to death in the electric chair in Pennsylvania for murder.

(35,426 posts)Problem is, I have nothing better. In the days when a person was rooted to a community and moving out would be very bad, one could trust the local community to uphold the sentence.
Now? People move, melt into other communities, we're rootless and there's no local enforcement mechanism.
So I'm against that which I believe necessary.

And my first thought was also how Chauvin survived 22 stab wounds.

(1,745 posts)I can just see it, guard is just standing there for the first 21 times. Then says "ok that's enough!"

(3,548 posts)Make a fist like youre holding a blade, and quickly pump your arm as if youre stabbing a sharp blade into a slab of beef. 22 times takes what? 15 seconds? A minute? I dont imagine he would have tried that with a guard standing right there, so yeah, I can see it happening.

(14,403 posts)This feels somewhat staged by BOP. Unofficial death sentence to make their lives easier.
John Turscak was probably not going to get out, and he probably did this to secure a better reputation in prison.

(1,197 posts)It's actually more surprising that he blew it up behind this nonsense. He woulda been out fairly soon.

(1,197 posts)People with 20 years in are acutely aware of their release dates. Now he really is never going to get out, and he'll probably be transfered to a higher security, harder time facility. I still think it's a surprising profile for this attack.

Damn him to Hell. I hope he recovers and lives a long time in prison.
