Inmate stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times, charged with attempted murder, prosecutors say

Source: Associated Press

A federal inmate was charged Friday with attempted murder in the prison stabbing of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd.

John Turscak stabbed Chauvin 22 times in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, with an improvised knife, federal prosecutors said. Turscak, 52, told correctional officers he would’ve killed Chauvin had they not responded so quickly, prosecutors said.

unless the inmate specifically says they want gen. pop.

Good that they're charging him with attempted murder, that'll keep in prison for the rest of his life if he isn't already in for a life sentence.

I hope Mr. Chauvin fully recovers, although, how do you fully recover from that mentally, so he can experience the same fear that G. Floyd experienced on that fateful day.

It was trash, but it was fun.

Good point on Chauvin living the rest of his life in the same fear George Floyd felt in his last gasps.

And I can tell you that Oz was pretty close to the truth about conditions inside our prisons, whether state or federal.

My late Uncle Jimmy was a CO in PA. It's just hitting me now how peculiar it is that his grandfather (my great grandfather) was put to death in the electric chair in Pennsylvania for murder.

Problem is, I have nothing better. In the days when a person was rooted to a community and moving out would be very bad, one could trust the local community to uphold the sentence.

Now? People move, melt into other communities, we're rootless and there's no local enforcement mechanism.

So I'm against that which I believe necessary.

Follow the example of Norway, for instance. The punishment is in losing your freedom and keeping dangerous people out of society, it shouldn’t be anything more than that.

He's probably only safe in a 24/7 cell by himself. But fuck him. George Floyd is dead and he didn't give a fuck he was killing him.

Turscak told FBI agents interviewing him after the assault that he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday as a symbolic connection to the Black Lives Matter movement, which garnered widespread support in the wake of Floyd’s murder in 2020, and the “Black Hand” symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia, prosecutors said.

Make a fist like you’re holding a blade, and quickly pump your arm as if you’re stabbing a sharp blade into a slab of beef. 22 times takes what? 15 seconds? A minute? I don’t imagine he would have tried that with a guard standing right there, so yeah, I can see it happening.

This feels somewhat staged by BOP. Unofficial death sentence to make their lives easier.

John Turscak was probably not going to get out, and he probably did this to secure a better reputation in prison.

People with 20 years in are acutely aware of their release dates. Now he really is never going to get out, and he'll probably be transfered to a higher security, harder time facility. I still think it's a surprising profile for this attack.

Damn him to Hell. I hope he recovers and lives a long time in prison.

If a fellow inmate is willing to serve the rest of his life in prison (this inmate was due for release in 2026) then it would be nearly impossible to detect and prevent.
