Utah women's basketball team 'troubled and shaken' as 'disturbing' details of alleged racist abuse directed at players
Source: CNN
The team has filed a police report and is now releasing more details of what it says occurred in Coeur dAlene, Idaho, on Thursday ahead of a game against South Dakota State in Spokane, Washington, which is about 30 miles away.
According to a statement from Utah Athletics Director Mark Harlan, deputy AD Charmelle Green and womens basketball coach Lynne Roberts, the team was on its way to dinner when a vehicle drove past and shouted racial epithets at the group.
Later, when the team was on its way back from dinner, a vehicle drove slowly past the group, revving its engine while the occupants again shouted racially disparaging words and threats, the statement said.

(21,328 posts)I was there in 1996 and couldnt get over the number of Nazi flags and white power signs. Coming from liberal SF it was shocking to me. I couldnt wait to get out of there after attending a wedding. Even my husband was a bit shaken by that area.
Small minded stupid racists who are pieces of shit!

(434 posts)I grew up in El Paso watching UTEP basketball. The BYU team and fans were always extremely racist, both when we were at home and when we played them on the road. The level of insults, catcalls, objects thrown at UTEP players on the court were truly outrageous. I wonder if BYU fans are better now.

(3,530 posts)Eastwood High School here, sisters went to Bel Air, parents went to Ysleta. UTEP Miner Basketball is famously the first college team to integrate racially, thereby winning the NCAA championship in the late 60s. I remember BYU being racist and hateful - and they say they are a "Christian College". They were not the only team. I was one of 3 white kids in my K-6 Elementary and was terribly mistreated and beaten by students. Even as a child, I understood that these kids knew about discrimination based on race themselves and were acting out against me in response to their own (collective) mistreatment. Still, I love the Mexican culture - Viva El Paso! I live on Mexican Food (the border style cooking).
El Paso is a true melting pot: whites from Texas who came to work on the Railroad (my family), Mexicans who came north for the better living standards, a whole host of nationalities who came from all over the US and around the world for the military (Ft. Bliss among others), and Californians who came for the low cost of living (mostly living on the West Side). El Paso is its own unique culture.
One thing I don't like - changing the name of the baseball team from the Sun Devils to the Chihuahuas. Really?! Chihuahuas?!? LOL
I hope LA is treating you well. Lived there 10 years and loved it!
Peace

(25,939 posts)However, that part of Idaho is known for neo-Nazi's going way back.
The team was harassed downtown and then they were followed back to their hotel. (I'm wondering if this was also sexual in nature???)
The police chief and local officials held a press conference and they were heckled at the press conference

(1,755 posts)That these students were not from BYU but from the University of Utah, a secular university. So it's not fair to judge them by what happened with a university run by and for people from a religion with a well-known penchant for racism.

(50,622 posts)Hayden is the place full of white nationalists. Hayden Lake the town - theres also a lake named that - is the Hayden Lake Country Club and a little piece of land wrapping around the lake. The few homes in Hayden Lake are in the seven-figure range, so no white nationalists live there. Those people live in the area between Atlas Road and Government Way.
