A strong earthquake rocks entire island of Taiwan, collapsing buildings. Tsunami alert issued

Source: Associated Press

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck off Taiwan early Wednesday, rocking the entire island and collapsing buildings. Japan issued a tsunami alert for the southern Japanese island group of Okinawa.

Japan's meteorological agency forecast a tsunami of up to 3 meters (9.8 feet).

Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency gave the magnitude as 7.2 while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 7.5.

Television showed buildings in the eastern city of Hualien shaken off their foundations.

I read that there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

I was mostly surprised by the initial quake, that was big. The aftershock thing is definitely the norm.

Seven dead, hundreds injured and dozens of buildings damaged in most powerful Taiwan quake in 25 years.

Strict building regulations and widespread public disaster awareness appear to have staved off a major catastrophe for the island, AFP reports.

Hualien, the quake's epicentre, is a small city on the east coast of Taiwan. It’s quite remote and home to the indigenous tribal cultures of Taiwan.

For most of its history, this area has been completely cut off from the rest of Taiwan because the central mountains of Taiwan are much bigger than most people realise - the highest peak is just short of 4,000 metres (13,100 ft) - that is higher than Mount Fuji.

Taroko Gorge just outside of Hualien is considered to be one of the natural wonders of Asia. People come from all over the world to see it and they might indeed be trapped in the gorge right now because of the earthquake and because of landslides.

Infrastructure has been improved over the last couple of decades, but this is still considered a difficult place to get to - and the only way that rescue teams are going to get there is by air.

ris Li, a tour guide at Taroko Gorge on the east coast, was on her way to the national park with a tour group when the earthquake hit. She had not entered the gorge at the time.

She told the BBC she has a colleague who is a tour guide who was hiking in the gorge and who has been uncontactable since the quake struck.

More from the Central Emergency Operation Centre press conference, where we've got some details on the people who have died in Hualien county.

The officials say three hikers were killed by falling rocks on the Dekalun trail, while a truck driver and another person in a private car died from falling debris at the Huide tunnel.

One person died at a quarry for Taiwan's national cement company, while a construction worker was killed on a nearby highway.

Taiwanese authorities have now confirmed that overall 127 are known to be trapped as a result of the Earthquake.

Of these, 77 of them are trapped inside the Jinwen and Qingshui tunnels under mountains in Hualien county, fire officials say.

And as we just reported below, two German citizens are trapped in the Chongde tunnel in Taroko National Park.

The remaining 50 people are trapped in four minibuses that were travelling from central Hualien City to nearby Taroko national park.
