Contraceptive Rights Push Hits Snag With Virginia Governor Veto

Democrats say contraception is under threat nationwide
Bills drew criticism from groups over ‘conscience’ objections

Virginia’s governor vetoed legislation Friday aiming to protect contraceptive access and insurance coverage, a loss for Democrats who worry that contraception could be among the anti-abortion movement’s next targets.

The action by Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) ends a weekslong back-and-forth with state legislators pushing for explicit protections for oral contraceptives and other forms of birth control after the US Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling this February recognizing unimplanted human embryos as children.

Youngkin said in a statement Friday that while he supports contraception access, he argued “any contraception-related changes must ...

I hate when these articles are behind paywalls. I cannot afford to subscribe to all of the different news outlets. There ought to be a way to know what our publicly elected officials say without having to pay for each article. I’ve wondered why we couldn’t have perhaps a bundle of outlets that a person could afford?

you'd have some money set aside and you'd use a few cents any time you clicked on a news article.....I don't understand why that has not yet happened....I too get frustrated at not being able to open links because I cannot have hundreds of subscriptions

... but every single outlet/channel wants to be the top dog, and tries to control the flow of clicks and $$. The end result is that the public loses and we're supposed to be OK with that because "business."

Virginia won’t have to deal with this clown any longer, but the rest of the country probably will. Youngkin had some major losses this year, but he’s still respected among Republicans for his ability to say crazy things while looking like a moderate.

Bills HB519 and SB716, if signed would have prohibited the Virginia Board of Medicine from taking disciplinary action against a doctor who provides abortion care; bills HB1539 and SB15, if signed, would have prohibited extradition from the commonwealth for health professionals who provide abortion care deemed illegal in another state.”

Youngkin won’t be waving around dead fetuses, but he’s just as much of a threat as those who do.

Virginians know who he is now - and we don’t like it. Northern Virginia is the largest voting block in the state and is predominantly liberal. I can’t see Virginia electing Youngkin as a Senator. But I can see the country electing him President.

Youngkin can probably fool a lot of the more reasonable Republicans and undecideds with his mild mannered ‘aw shucks’ persona. That sweater vest will get a serious workout. Youngkin certainly is not going to run on his degree from Harvard and his long-standing job as CEO of the Carlyle Group. Of course, if elected Youngkin will do what Republican politicians always do - cave to his billionaire supporters and Leonard Leo while raping the country and conning the electorate into thinking that he is operating in their best interests. The man is dangerous.
