Schumer calls for bill to ban bump stocks after Supreme Court ruling

Source: The Hill

06/14/24 12:33 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Friday condemned a 6-3 Supreme Court ruling overturning the Trump-era ban on bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic guns to fire like machine guns, and called on Congress to pass legislation to counter the decision.

“The far-right Supreme Court continues their unprecedented assault on public safety by reversing the commonsense guidance issued in 2018 by the ATF. Bump stocks have played a devastating role in many of the horrific mass shootings in our country, but sadly it’s no surprise to see the Supreme Court roll back this necessary public safety rule as they push their out of touch extreme agenda. They’re even further to the right of Donald Trump,” Schumer said in a statement responding to the ruling.

“As I warned the Trump administration at the time, the only way to permanently close this loophole is through legislation. Senate Democrats are ready to pass legislation to ban bump stocks but we will need votes from Senate Republicans,” he said.

The Trump administration banned bump stocks through executive action after the 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, where a shooter used the device and killed nearly 60 people, making it the deadliest shooting in U.S. history.

I'm no expert, but the old 6-shot revolvers used 100+ years ago were semiautomatic, because they fired a shot with each pull of the trigger, were they not?

And correct me if I'm wrong but I believe every firearm used by law enforcement today is semiautomatic. Imagine trying to ban all of them. It's simply not realistic & not helpful to finding practical ways to reduce gun violence & deaths.

The term is often oversimplified to be “fires each time you pull the trigger” - but the “auto” part actually refers to whether the firing of one round automatically chambers the next round and (for fully auto) whether it continues to fire.

With most revolvers, the trigger pull both rotates the cylinder and fires the round.

Not considered a semi auto, but the definition of "one pull, one shot" applies.

And every poll I've seen that asks specifically about banning handguns (not assault rifles) shows very little support for such a thing, something like 70/30 against such a ban, on average.

Even most liberals approve of owning handguns for self defense, despite the fact that the vast majority of gun violence in this nation is due to handguns.

Thomas and Alito are so petty it is absolutely unbelievable. And the other four conservatives are apparently agreeable with that kind of behavior.

Their primary tactic is to sabotage common sense.

As the Constitution requires. The SC is out of touch with reality, common sense and the will of the people. If they spent more time with the public instead of their soirées with billionaires having brandy and cigars, they could make better decisions.

They never ruled we have a right to own bump stocks, they ruled Congress had not banned them, which was the correct ruling as Congress did not ban them or include language that would include them in machine gun regulations.

Schumer is taking the proper course of action and introducing new legislatin that would solve that problem.

....it was a technical ruling that said they weren't illegal unless Congress passed a law that said so (IOW - the ATF couldn't arbitrarily rule them illegal). Hence Schumer's proposed legislation.

Even if by some miracle we saw a 6/3 majority liberal court another one in the in the future like we have now can overturn a ruling about a law like they did with abortion.
The time has come instead to hammer the Republicans over every death of a grade schooler and put them on the defensive both at the Federal and State level and make it so they own every death and hopefully regain enough power to get a new Amendment that gives the government some clear ability to regulate guns in a way that the Court can go fuck themselves.

That has been done to the point that the survivors of the mass shooting in the school that was being torn down yesterday (Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland), who are now high school graduates AND the survivors of the earlier Sandy Hook massacre (also now high school graduates), intensively LOBBIED Congress (Republicans) and participated in multiple Congressional hearings, and held dozens and dozens of marches and rallies nationwide, for all those years after these (and other) mass shooting events happened.

Some dribs and drabs of laws were put in place over that time, but you can't EVER say that the "hammering" somehow didn't happen.

The only thing left is to literally show images of the bloody aftermath of a mass shooting of a child, which the families have yet to consent to allowing.
