Investigators for 9/11 families examine video taken by man with ties to Saudi intelligence referencing a "plan"

For more than two decades, the U.S. position has been that al Qaeda acted alone on September 11th, but a newly public video has raised questions about whether the Saudi government provided crucial assistance to the hijackers during the 9/11 terror attacks. Omar al-Bayoumi, whom the FBI says was an operative of the Saudi intelligence service with close ties to two of the 9/11 hijackers, can be heard on the video, which was unsealed in federal court this week and obtained by 60 Minutes.
The 1999 video was taken within 90 days of the time when senior al Qaeda planners were deciding on 9/11 targets, Richard Lambert, a retired FBI agent who led the initial 9/11 investigation in San Diego, said. "It is another very large brick in a massive wall of evidence that at this point indicates the Saudi government was complicit in the 9/11 attacks," Lambert said.
What the video shows
Bayoumi filmed the video over the course of several days. It shows entrances and exits of the U.S. Capitol along with security posts and a model of the building. At one point, he points out the Washington Monument and says he'll go there and "report to you in detail what is there." He also notes the airport is nearby.
Lambert, who's now a consultant on the case filed by the families of 9/11 victims to hold Saudi Arabia responsible in the Sept. 11 attacks, said knowledge of where the Washington Monument is in relation to other D.C. landmarks could help guide people toward intended targets.

Starting with the absurd canard that it was "Clinton's fault because he didn't take out bin Laden when he could've!" - something you still hear from some of them if the subject comes up.
They had to give up on it because it wasn't sticking - but they tried.

If your plan is to crash a jetliner into the Capitol, things like entrances, exits, and security posts are pretty irrelevant. And any map of DC shows where the Washington Monument is in relation to the Capitol.

(132,558 posts)The fact that the planes that were headed for D.C. did so AFTER the 2 in NY had already hit their target WTC towers, and they might have anticipated that the U.S. government (military/security/intelligence) would have been on alert (which they were), and could attempt to intercept the D.C.-bound planes - not just in the air, but from the ground.
The plane that hit the Pentagon obviously had to fly low to crash into what was obviously NOT a "tower" or easy target.

San Diego Reader, September 7, 2016
The 9/11 attacks could have been derailed in San Diego, had the CIA not spiked a memo alerting the FBI about an Al Qaeda terrorist who was coming to the United States and ended up living here in 2000.
Former FBI agent Mark Rossini, who was assigned to the CIAs Counterterrorism Center, said CIA officials blocked the memo to the FBI because the agency was complicit with Saudi intelligence agents who were trying to recruit Khalid al-Mihdhar and/or Nawaf al-Hazmi. Mihdhar and Hazmi, both Saudis, lived in Clairemont and Lemon Grove in 2000 and were in the plane that crashed into the Pentagon.
Omar al-Bayoumi, a Saudi and former Clairemont resident who many local Muslims suspected of being a Saudi spy, was assigned to shadow Mihdhar and Hazmi, said Rossini. When asked if Bayoumi was also supposed to recruit the terrorists, Rossini said, Of course he was. How else could he just bump into them and get them an apartment? Thats the whole point. Its an outrage.
Bayoumis story was told in the San Diego Readers July 27 issue. He emerged as the most enigmatic character in the 9/11 saga.
Bayoumi claimed that he met Mihdhar and Hazmi by accident in a Los Angeles restaurant on February 1, 2000, and persuaded them to move to San Diego. On February 4, 2000, he was helping the pair fill out a rental application and move next door to him at a Clairemont apartment complex. He also helped the terrorists open a bank account and paid their first months rent, for which he was promptly reimbursed. Bayoumi claimed he was simply doing a favor for fellow Muslims. Investigations by the FBI and 9/11 Commission concluded that Bayoumi did not have prior knowledge of the attacks and the assistance he gave the terrorists was unwitting. Neither body addressed the possibility that he may have been ordered by Saudi intelligence to recruit the pair, though their reports acknowledged that Bayoumi was suspected of being a Saudi agent who kept tabs on local Saudis.
A report released by the Justice Departments Office of the Inspector General in 2004 said Bayoumi became of peripheral interest to the FBI in 1995 in another terrorism investigation and again in 1998, when the FBI learned he may have been a Saudi agent. But a possible connection to Saudi intelligence alone did not justify an investigation of Bayoumi, because Saudi Arabia was considered a friendly nation, said the report.

So. Why did CIA tell the FBI to let them go?

(15,766 posts)Zacarias Moussaoui was the guy at the Minnesota flight school who was really interested in steering and navigating a 747, not so much taking off or landing. His flight instructor became suspect and notified FBI. They ignored his call, so the flight instructor called his Rep in Washington DC, who got the FBI to take action. After interviewing Moussaoui, they arrested him, but did not go through his laptop computer, even though it would have shown he was tied to 9-11 hijackings. ETA: The flight instructor who turned in Moussaoui later died as the co-pilot who perished in the crash that also claimed the life of Paul Wellstone and his party.

(29,342 posts)about the interrogation of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad in Pakistan.
The story goes that we sent in a team of USA interrogators of Saudi ethnicity, dressed as agents of the Saudi secret police... and KSM gave them a number to call who would help get him out of Pakistan.
The fake Saudi agents looked up the phone number and it was the private line to the chief of the Saudi Intelligence Force... a relative of Prince Ahmed Salmon who was here in the USA... a horse racing enthusiast... his prize horse had just won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness ( War Emblem ), and War Emblem was about to run in the Belmont for the rare triple crown. But instead of watching the race, Ahmed was recalled to SA where, at age 43, he suddenly died of a heart attack. On the way to the funeral, the head of Saudi Intelligence who owned the phone number that KSM had given the fake Saudi security agents died in a car crash ( in a convoy of cars with security forces ). Another highly ranked Saudi royal was killed just days later.
No idea if the details of this story are true (the KSM and phone number bit). But the rest of it is true. Given the practices of the Saudi Royals and their "security" services... it does make you think.
from wikipedia
Ahmed bin Salmon died of heart failure at age 43 in Riyadh on 22 July 2002.[18] He was buried in Al IUD cemetery on 23 July 2002 after funeral prayers at the Imam Turkic bin Abdul mosque in Riyadh.[19][20][21] His cousin, Sultan bin Faisal bin Turkic bin Abdul, brother of Abdul bin Faisal, was coming to Riyadh to participate in funeral prayers for Prince Ahmed when he was killed in a car crash. The cousins were buried together.
In Why America Slept (2003), Gerald Poser claimed Ahmed bin Salmon, along with Sultan bin Faisal bin Turkic bin Abdul, and Prince Fahd bin Turkic bin Saudi al-Caber, all had ties to al-QED, and had advance knowledge of the September 11, 2001 attacks. All three died within days of each other, soon after the CIA inquired about their possible connection to the attacks.[24] The story was strongly denied by his family, who claimed he admired the United States, spent a great deal of time at his home there in Bradbury, California, and had invested heavily in the American horse racing industry.
