President Joe Biden on Wednesday awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards at a private ceremony, the White House said.
Richards, the daughter of the late Texas Gov. Ann Richards, left the reproductive health care organization in 2018 after leading it for 12 years.
Earlier this year, Richards revealed she was battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer the same that killed Bidens son Beau.
Biden posted on X that it was his "honor" to award Cecile Richards the Medal of Freedom, and shared a photo of him, first lady Jill Biden, Richards and Richards's husband, Kirk Adams.

(433 posts)I worked at the PBS station in Austin back in the mid-1980-90s. Had the honour to meet her a few times. Great lady with lots of presence. Her election gave me hope that Texas politics were turning around.
No such luck. Sigh.

...as opposed to one who doesn't dress at all........
Thank you, Dr. Biden, for the grace and class you have shown for all these years. Your predecessor/successor should have as much.

(57,085 posts)But I am saddened beyond belief at her affliction. I haven't seen her in a few years, and I might not see her again, depending on how aggressive her cancer is. Glioblastoma took a cousin, and aunt, and my wife's brother. Once it is diagnosed, it is not a question of "if," but "when."
From better days:

(62,448 posts)You can see PJB trying to support her, but she looks really weak on her right side. The last time I saw her on Deadline WhiteHouse, she did well, but I could tell there was something off with her affect. I hope she can pass peacefully when the time comes.
On edit: you can see the new asymmetry in her facial muscles.
She's been an inspiration to so many women. Her passing will be a sad day for us all, like her mother's passing.

(4,336 posts)She is a great lady. It is very sad she has glioblastma brain tumor. My 26 year old son died from it 25 years ago. I am sure she will be as brave as he was.
