(Michigan Gov.) Snyder: Abortion, gun bills will get tough scrutiny
Source: Detroit News
Gov. Rick Snyder suggested Friday he may use his veto pen on social reforms pushed through in the last hours of a divisive lame-duck legislative session but lauded gains for Detroit lighting, a new hockey arena, regional transportation authority and economic reforms.
In a wide-ranging interview with The Detroit News editorial board Friday morning, the governor said he wants Michiganians to move forward from this week's battle over right to work, which he said "may cause a ruckus in the short term but is good to get it over with instead of going on and on and on."
... Republicans passed sweeping restrictions on abortion, eased up on gun regulations and added a citizens' check-off box on election forms that was previously vetoed by Snyder.
"There were a lot of things coming out of the Legislature that are not things we sought out," Snyder said. "We'll scrutinize them all. Social issues are things I do not seek out so those will be ones we spend an extra amount of time scrutinizing."

(15,550 posts)I heard on NPR about an hour ago that across the state, Michiganders (probably Dems) are calling for him to veto the shit bill they passed allowing concealed carry in schools. Now he's in the hot seat and let's see what he does.
He should be tarred and feathered by the people of our state and rode out of town on a hot poker stick.

(6,045 posts)Why do the polls show a majority of Michiganders approve of the Right to Work Law? Plus, was there not a measure on the ballot this past November that would have prevented this Right to Work Law from happening yet it was defeated??
Is it talk radio or what is it that has folks so upset with unions that they would support such a bill? The same applied (Majority supported Scott Walker) in Wisconsin although many here claimed otherwise...I am a Union Member, Sheet Metal Union Local 85 in Atlanta & I am for Card Check i am just curious why Unions are so disliked in what use to be Union strongholds? Are Unions doing something that is pissing people off or is this just another example of misinformed voters?
It blows me away that folks would vote for Obama but vote against the measure that would have prevented this right to work bill from coming law...Or am I missing something? Or is this just the reality like in Wisconsin where folks supported Scott Walker yet voted for Obama?

(15,550 posts)For one thing, unions in general have taken a beating since the Reagan years, so union membership is way down. Most people don't belong to unions any longer. Human behavior being what it is, most people don't fight as much or care as much about an issue until it affects them personally. Again, human behavior being what it is, people think that something they've had or enjoyed the benefits of for a very long time will never go away. Think abortion. I'm a 63-year old woman who remembers how hard our generation of women fought for the right to safe abortions, but I work with a lot of young 20-something women who just assume it could never be taken away from them.
Another reason is that even those of us who are pro-union think that in some ways public sector union employees went way too far in their demands and they were getting giddy with their own power.
I was a public sector union employee at my place of work for half of the years I worked there and then in administration the other half and I could see both sides of the issue after that. Some of the union members used the grievance process or just the threat of grievance to hold the employer hostage. They weren't the majority and they were usually the worst employees. A few can give all a bad name.
Also, many, many long time union (UAW) members took buyouts in their 50's and are living nice comfortable retirements and no longer care what happens to the next generation. It's the "I've got mine, you can fight for your own" mentality.

(11,521 posts)What a piece of work. These crap bills are bought and paid for by the Kochs, and brought to the people of Michigan through the good graces of a lame duck congress and the Koch-puppet governor. They'll be signed within seconds of them reaching his desk.

(11,481 posts)The big time capitalists that pulled his strings on the RTW laws have gotten what they wanted already. So they'll allow Snyder to veto these bills thinking it will let the left think they've gotten a "victory" and burnish Snyder's "moderate" credentials. These types of issues are only a wedge to elect the people who will give them their economic wishes. And that's already happened.
Now that doesn't mean that they will NOT allow these bills to be enacted into law because either way is fine with them. If the Michigan legislature can override a veto and get these laws on the books, that's OK too. These types of bills are just pawns on the board.
