Supporters stand by Mich. gun bill after Conn. massacre

Source: USA Today

Friday's deadly school shooting in Connecticut came less than 24 hours after Michigan lawmakers passed legislation that allows those with concealed pistol licenses to carry guns into schools and other once forbidden places.

Proponents of the legislation said if the bill is signed into law, it would give people the opportunity to respond to crimes and possibly stop a similar situation.

"This kind of tragedy is hard to process, but if one person – a faculty member or a parent – could legally carry, at least it could have limited some of the mayhem," said Rob Harris, media director for Michigan Open Carry Inc., on Friday. "This legislation has to be passed to at least have a fighting chance against the evil in this world."

The Michigan Legislature passed Senate Bill 59 on Thursday, which tweaks the concealed weapons law by allowing gun owners who receive eight additional hours of training to carry their weapons in formerly gun-free areas, such as day care centers, schools, hospitals, churches and stadiums and bars.

Part of the problem we have here is somehow we have accepted that the evil in this world is as close as out our front door.

A faculty member or adult who can legally carry stands a chance against a gunman armed to the teeth wearing a bulelet proof vest in a suicidal/homicidal rage?

The lone "hero" meme used to justify absurd gun laws is insane wishful thinking.

I find the teacher to be at an extreme disadvantage. Sure they might get lucky. But equally likely or even more likely, allowing that gun into the schools will result in other unfortunate and predictable "accidents" or "events".

I think that thinking this way is absurd. It is equivalent to saying: "Let's turn our schools into the wild west so that we can justify our silly 2nd amendement." I'm sorry but I find the whole way of thinking abhorrent and absurd.

We need to grow up and recognize which century we actually live in. Not which century we apparently "wish" we lived in.

they may be able to prevent this type of thing, but if someone has the right vests the Police can't stop it. A teacher that had a permit and was allowed to carry while working )without anyone knowing it) would give some chance of success. I have carried a gun for many years and there is no way you can tell that I have one. A cop friend came over and we walked around a little then I asked him was I armed and he said no, I showed him how easy it was to hide a gun I showed him three guns, not little guns. One day I walked to his car with a rifle hidden with 25 rounds in it. You can't protect yourself from someone that knows what they are doing.

A determined person can walk into any "soft target" looking seemingly innocent and yet carrying a dangerous weapon that can kill multiple people before anyone even fully processes what is happening. The element of surprise is what they count on working in their favor.

school teachers and in this case the dead adults were all women.

Plus, wouldn't they have to wear bullet proof vests all the time...it's just ridiculous to think arming teachers
would make a difference.

and other legislative bodies on the same theory - armed citizens will protect them or they can protect themselves. Right!!! Notice that legislatures ban all guns as do courts because of the danger. Who are these people kidding with the notion that armed citizens make everyone safer. They need to put their money (lives) where their mouth is.

Which is it, assholes? Are we to be trusted with guns but not with negotiating our own contracts? WTF?!

I will never be armed in my classroom. I will not give a student another weapon to get a hold of and use on anyone, and I refuse to act like a prison guard. I am a teacher. Period.

that Snyder is now "waiting to sign the legislation". Another freakin' coward of a "man" and I put that term in quotes because he isn't a man in the true sense of the word. He's cowed by the RW and the NRA and afraid to stand up to them.

Hope Michigan gives him an earful if he signs the legislation. He'll probably do it under the dark of night when he thinks no one is looking like the true coward he is.

Although, they too, are trying to change this. I don't think I would want to work at a school where teachers are carrying guns. If I had kids, I wouldn't want to send them there either.

However, at least where I have worked, protections are in place. All the elementary schools have a police officer in a squad car by the entrance to the school building. Some have two. The HS had 4 squad cars right by the Admin. entrance.

All the classroom doors were required to be locked at all times. When staff took the kids out, we carried a key with us. When I worked with emotionally disturbed Pre-teen boys, and autistic kids, we all carried radios, so we could contact the Deputy, Principal, ABS. When we had those lock downs, besides the classroom door locking automatically, we had metal hurricane shutters on the outside windows. A gunman would have to shoot the lock on the metal door or through the shutters. We also locked the kids in the classroom bathroom, in addition.

Sure, a gunman could still get in but he would have to go through a whole lot of obstacles, including armed police on campus

Personally, I think something like this is far, far better than ARMED TEACHERS.
