Canada PM agrees to hunger striking chief's demand for talks

OTTAWA — Canada's prime minister agreed Friday to talks with aboriginal leaders as a hunger strike by one native chief, demanding improvements to squalid living conditions on reserves, entered its fourth week.

In a statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he would take part in a "working meeting" with a delegation of aboriginal leaders on January 11.

These talks would come almost one year after Harper met with hundreds of native leaders in Ottawa to reset the Crown's strained relations with Canada's 1.2 million natives.

Following complaints of poor results from last year's summit, this new round of talks will focus on aboriginal treaty rights and economic development in impoverished native communities, Harper's office said.
