Sen. Rand Paul calls for gradual cut in aid to Israel

Sen. Rand Paul calls for gradual cut in aid to Israel
January 7, 2013
By Associated Press

JERUSALEM — In his first visit to Israel, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is calling for a gradual reduction of American foreign aid.

It's an unlikely place to deliver the message, since Israel is among the largest recipients of American assistance. But Paul said in a Monday meeting with reporters that the U.S. can't afford to keep sending money overseas, even to allies like Israel. He says it would be "harder to be a friend of Israel if we are out of money."

The Kentucky Republican, a longtime opponent of foreign aid, acknowledges he's expressing a "minority opinion" and doubts Congress will cut aid. He insists Washington should first cut aid to countries with strained ties to America, such as Pakistan and Egypt.

Israel gets about $3 billion a year in military aid.

After all, they are overwrought about spending, they claim. IF that's the case, using our tax dollars HERE would make so much more sense.

They meant the starving masses. That's what they said. Why are you attributing political statements to the ordinary people in Gaza?

I thought that you might have compassion, with your religious background. It seems not.

Not so much. Israel ships in food supplies in convoys and Gaza markets are filled with produce, people, and guns.

Ayman, 15, lives in Khuza’a, an impoverished village in southern Gaza, where extreme poverty has dramatically increased due to the blockade. For Ayman, whether or not he’s able to go to school each day is determined by how much food is left in the cupboards.

“Every morning, the first thing I do is go to the kitchen,” he said. “If there is food, I go to school; if there is none, I go to work.”

Almost 58 percent of Palestinians live in poverty, and about half of this group lives in extreme poverty. About 50 percent of Palestinians experience or risk experiencing food insecurity. Food insecurity is particularly severe in Gaza, where the majority of the population relies on humanitarian assistance to survive. The rate of chronic malnutrition in children under the age of five has increased, reaching almost 10 percent, and the mortality figures for children under the age of one and under the age of five have each increased by about 30 percent. Anaemia is common, with 55 percent of children under the age of three affected by the condition. Among pregnant women, the rate is 36 percent―46 percent for nursing mothers. The West Bank and Gaza ranks 114 out of 187 countries on the United Nations Development Programme's 2011 human development index.

Israel's military blockade of Gaza has left more than 1.4 million Palestinian men, women and children trapped in the Gaza Strip, an area of land just 40 kilometres long and 9.5 kilometres wide.

Mass unemployment, extreme poverty and food price rises caused by shortages have left four in five Gazans dependent on humanitarian aid. As a form of collective punishment, Israel’s continuing blockade of Gaza is a flagrant violation of international law.

but preventing food from crossing. I am not saying that the continued conflict has not caused shortages of everything, but I do think propaganda on both sides is obscuring the actual conditions.

We do know that there is a steady flow of weapons into the Gaza, so you need to ask yourself why it is that food supplies cannot enter the same way. Short answer is that they are, and food shipments also come in by the truckload from Israel.

As an official of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt said a few days ago, Israel will cease to exist within a decade.

This is a better way to assess what is represented, food security for 1.2 million children in the USA.

Of course, AIPAC is the largest lobby group in DC, and they do hand out millions annually to friendly lawmakers. The upside I guess, if you want to call it such, is that a portion of the taxpayer funds given to Israel every year does manage to find it's way back here to the US via AIPAC. Pocket grease.

If we are so worried about Terrorism... stop using Predator Drones on innocent women and children.

If we stop killing their family.. maybe peace will break out all over world?

There is a better way.. and Dwight D Eisenhower was correct about his warning concerning the Military Industrial Complex.
