MEXICO CITY (AP) An explosion in the basement of a building next to the headquarters of Mexico's state-owned oil company in the capital left several workers injured Thursday, the company said.
Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, said workers have been evacuated from the building. A reporter at the scene saw rescue workers trying to free several workers trapped in the building.
Local media reported that at least one person had died. Television images showed people being evacuated on office chairs, and gurneys. Most of them showed injuries likely caused by falling debris.
Pemex said in a Tweet that several workers were injured in the blast but no one answered at its offices.

(Reuters) - An explosion rocked the Mexico City headquarters of state oil giant Pemex on Thursday, killing at least 14 people and injuring 80 others, the government said.
The blast, which media reports said was caused by machinery, hit the lower floors of the downtown building, throwing debris into the streets and sending workers running outside.
Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong told Mexican television the blast had killed 14 people and injured 80. It was not yet clear what caused the explosion, and the death toll could still rise, he added.

(3,746 posts)MEXICO CITY (AP) Rescuers searched for survivors Friday and authorities promised a thorough investigation after an office building blast killed 32 people and injured 121 at the headquarters of Mexico's state-owned oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos.
The cause of the basement explosion in an administrative building next to the iconic, 51-story Pemex tower in Mexico City remained a mystery, with President Enrique Pena Nieto urging people not to speculate. Theories ranged from an electrical fire to an air conditioning problem to a possible attack.
"We have no conclusive report on the reason," Pena Nieto told reporters. "We will work to get to the bottom of the investigation to find out, first, what happened ... and if there are people responsible in this case, that we apply the full weight of the law against them."
Pemex Director Emilio Lozoya said Friday that the death toll had risen to 32, with 121 people were treated for injuries after Thursday's blast. He said that rescue efforts continue and people still could be trapped.
