Exotic birds abandoned, left to die in Grandview home rescued
Source: Fox 4 Kansas City(not Fox news)
GRANDVIEW, Mo. A Pleasant Valley, Mo., house in the 6800 block of Sobbie Road had literally been left to the birds. When Carol Fisher entered the home her ex-husband used to live in, she discovered six parrots roaming the back of the home with little food, no water and no heat.
It was a deplorable mess as far as Im concerned, she said. I think a bird should be treated like a dog or cat.
The Excelsior Springs woman believes the two cockatoos and four macaws had literally been eating the walls since October to survive. Thats when her divorce was granted, but the judge told her she had to wait 120 days before she could enter the home her husband had been living for 11 years. Fisher says the home looked like an episode of Hoarders and was surprised the birds were still alive.
Dr. Julie Burge and two volunteers with Burges Bird Services rescued the birds and brought five of them to Burges Bird Rescue clinic in Grandview, Mo.

(67,112 posts)a 7x24 true friend. I really have difficulty with people that harm defenseless pets. I often look at my cat next to me, purring away loudly wondering how anyone can be cruel to defenseless pets or any animal. It's really the mark of a low life despicable individual to do this harm.

It breaks my heart hearing stories like this one.

(1,240 posts)If you were to experience the consciousness of a dog or cat or other mammal, you would probably be shocked to how similar it is to your own. They have a soul just like we do. To think they are less than us is egocentric and naive. We are pet guardians not pet owners. They are truly our friends and loved ones. Its also sad they live such shorter lives than we do.

"Left to die"....my god. How is it possible to do that?
I'm so glad those poor birds got rescued in the nick of time. Poor things!

airplaneman
(1,240 posts)Actually I recovered rather quickly as I never did get any work in that field. I am now an insignificant meaningless nothing in a small family business. But don't worry as long as I shut up and do what I am told I will continue to draw a small paycheck and not share any significant wealth in the business. Not much longer before I retire without very much money.
Remember save a little each year and by the time you retire you will be surprised how little you have.

(51,666 posts)professional ethics translates into years of hard work and little to show for it (I'm self-employed).
But I'll make the world's best petsitter when I retire. And I do some writing on the side that actually pays a little.
Biochem for Medical Majors almost did me in my senior year of undergrad waaaaayyyy back in 1977.

(11,843 posts)But I kind of liked it... Used up a lot of 14x8.5 inch band printer grabbed from the computer center to write out calculations for error analysis. Not that I'm doing anything with my chemistry degree these days. I taught myself computer programming and it has been paying the bills for longer (and better) than I worked as a chemist.

(31,493 posts)Hi,
I watched some of the videos, what a cool bird. I have always wanted one, but I'm not at a point where I can make the commitment to provide a bird the time he/she would need.

(332 posts)I am a bird lover and have a blue and gold macaw for 15 years since a baby. What also is interesting to me from the article is that I use to live up not far from there and I had taken my birds to Dr Julie Burge before. She is the best known bird vet in all of that part of MO. She is wonderful lady!
I hope they get good homes, the poor babies! Here is my Bingo.........

(15,189 posts)I used to have a Yellow Collared Macaw named Stella who loved to eat pot seeds, and would love to go the pet store with me to buy her food. She would trip out on herself in the rear view mirror. She was given to me but she favored men. I kept her for about a year, but I felt I didn't spend enough time with her. So I gave her to these women in my town who raised birds. Stella went to an avery in San Diego and had a baby and that baby was then raised by the women I gave Stella to. Birds belong with birds, so I was so happy to hear that she found a mate.
I hope someday we will stop the bird trade. As much as we love them, it's not right to put such creatures in a cage.

(332 posts)have often felt bad about having an exotic bird. Mine does have a pretty good life for the past 15yrs as he has the run of the house and only caged about 1/2 the time. He also has a huge outdoor cage 8x15x8' with tree branches etc. that he spends all the good weather days in. I do believe he would be happier living in the amazon forests where he is meant to be.
He was actually born in an incubator and hand raised so has never known what a real life would be, as opposed to many that are wild caught.
So, yes you are correct and us humans ( I am guilty) want to own and possess living creatures for our pleasure.

Could he be charged with a misdemeanor? (at the least)
Another thing ticking me off is the FOX (tv) headline at the beginning, it states "Exotic Birds Damage House." To some short attention span folks, they are lead to believe the birds are simply destructive, change the channel please.
A quick recovery for those beauties!

Even if you are going to abandon your animal and abdicate responsibility, just find a shelter or something, JEEEEZUS!!!
