The Williamson Daily News reports the suspect accused of killing Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum approached his sport utility vehicle and shot him point-blank.
I don't know about West Virginia, but in our county The Sheriff is elected.
Damn. Damn, and double damn.

(9,919 posts)The frequency of attacks on police and DAs may or may not be linked, but the IDEA certainly IS...make the law enforcement afraid to do their jobs to allow criminals more latitude in their affairs.
I am sick to death of having STUPIDITY rule our nation - we waste resources on x-ray peep shows at airports and sniffing grandma's shoes; yet instead of treating these cases as DOMESTIC TERRORISTS, and sicking the dogs on them, we allow this kind of rampant criminality to go on without an appropriate response.
I have to tell you, I feel A LOT LESS SECURE knowing that the criminal justice system can be intimidated and bullied than I fear foreign terrorists.

(2,529 posts)in the city. They were afraid for my grandson and still thought the old gang problem of the 80s and 90s was raging in the city. My daughter-in-law longed for the security of the rural town she'd been brought up in around the Shady Spring/Cool Ridge area. They were shocked at the change that had occurred in her absence. Meth and illegal pill drug use were rampant and my daughter-in-law's families in Daniels and Beckley had their homes broken into multiple times. Her family slept with their guns in their bedrooms. They were all tiny rural towns in the area, but were all experiencing crime waves due to drug abusers needing to steal to fund their habit. It was shocking to me too. I remember W.V. being bucolic, even if parts of it tended toward racism and misogyny. The FBI statistics are true. Crime really has been moving to America's rural areas.
