American tourist gang-raped in India

Source: BBC News

Indian police say that a 30-year-old American woman has been gang-raped in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.

Course accepting a ride was dangerous, but still is there an alert out?

The US and Abroad. I recently read that one out of every eight Peace Corps volunteers reported sexual assault in 2012 as well, kind of a global epidemic.

denying the nasty rape culture that exists?

India really needs to get a grip on this. But it's evident that the police and law enforcement there are pretty much useless and dramatic cultural shifts need to take place. This is the second most populated country in the world - and the world's largest democracy - yet, it seems unable to shed certain precepts about women and their role in society - whether it comes to female infanticide, dowries, or blaming a woman for rape or other violent acts. Without properly empowering women, it cannot bring millions out of poverty and all the dreams and promises of a democracy will seem hollow.

But before we focus on India, we should also look at ourselves. How many women within the armed forces have been raped? How about the overabundance of ignorant and sexist remarks by politicians and the media? It seems that at least once a week we hear about a politician making some asinine remark about women.

There's a lot of reeducation that needs to be done, and not just in India and the Middle East.

BTW, it's never a good idea to accept rides from strangers. No matter what country you're in. I have a very good friend who was raped, along with another girl, while hitchhiking in FL may years ago. The bastards left them for dead in an orange grove. Luckily, they were beat up, but survived.
