Young Tornado Victim Killed by Dog in Arkansas

Source: localmemphis.com

JESSIEVILLE, AR (localmemphis.com) - A 5-year-old staying with family friends after his home was destroyed by the storms in Moore, Oklahoma was killed after he was mauled by a dog in Garland County.

His parents had stayed behind to figure things out in Moore, and they sent their two young children to stay with friends at a home near Jessieville.

Garland County deputies say the attack happened around noon Sunday at a home off Highway 298. The boy was attacked by a bullmastiff estimated to be between 150- 170 pounds.

According to Sheriff Scott Hinojosa, "The child was putting on some shoes and was crying and upset and the dog possibly took that as being aggressive and at that time the child was attacked."

Presumably from the owner. I wonder if it realized it did something really bad. Perhaps it was abused too.

4. I think the owner must be hiding it.

How does a bull mastiff hide out anywhere? They're kind of LARGE, as I recall.

its recommended an adult be present but thats really only common sense when you are talking about any large dog when it involves children imo.

6. I bet you the owners of the dog trained a dog with latent guarding and protection instinct

to attack, which is what people with dogs like that tend to do.

Owned Rotties, German Shepherds and various mastiff breeds (French, Neos, English) all my life. No owner should ever train these dogs to attack. You are creating a weapon.

Bullmastiffs are powerful dogs, but should not attack anyone unless their owners or property is in danger. Someone did not train the dog correctly. As a result, someone needs to be charged with manslaughter and unfortunately (or fortunately if the dog has been trained to attack) the dog will need to be put down.

Sad all the way around.

My Rottie did the same thing once on some guy's leg, but the guy broke in a window and tried to enter the house to rob me while I slept. Dog waited until the guy had his foot touch the sofa, then bit down hard on his leg around his ankle. Dude started screaming "get it off of me." Out came my Ruger, cocked and locked while my dog held the guy down. I gave the command "release," she did, pointed the at him and told the guy to back up and leave because if I didn't shoot him, I'd let the dog (whose haunches were up and snarling) take another piece. Guy turned and ran. I gave the relax command "finished" and the dog went back to normal. Police came and sitting by the door, tongue out wagging her tail was my Rottie. One of the cops, after getting my story, went next door to Jack-In-The-Box and bought my little girl a couple of cheeseburgers.

Bullmastiffs are the same way in many respects. Most mastiffs instinct is to push down the intruder and wrap their teeth around their neck to immobilize them until their owner releases them. If the intruder moves, they bite down a little harder to show the intruder they mean business. Mastiffs normally do not attack things smaller than them nor do they attack humans.

9. I have no idea why people insist on owning these giant dogs.

There's no room for error there. A wiener dog can be very vicious, but even if it snaps, one can generally handle a 15 lbs. dog. 150 lbs.? Forget about it.

What's the attraction?

Wish I could remember the comedian that was riffing on his "one rule for buying a dog." He said that the one thing he looks for when adopting or buying a pet is asking himself "if it goes beserk, can I take it down?" If the answer is no, he moves on to the next dog.

A 150# bull mastiff would be a tall order if one were an unarmed adult. You might win, but it definitely wouldn't be any fun.

but they are so big they don't fit anywhere. Too big for the house and yet they aren't good outside dogs.

They eat a lot.

They weigh so much you can't get them to the vet if something goes wrong.

They only live to be about 8. The average lifespan of a great dane is 5.

They slobber.

You need a wheelbarrow to pick up the poop.

They cost a whole lot to buy.

And they have a lot of health problems to your vet bills are humongus.

And if they hurt someone you are in a huge amount of trouble.

Other than that they are great dogs.

I have a Bullmastiff. 120 pounds. He is very gentle and was with my mom all day while I was at work when I moved in to take care of her. He knew exactly how to act around her and watched over her.

It is how they are raised. Now that I am in a new place, my Bullmastiff has been rushed by two Chihuahuas, one small Poodle and Spaniel. Just walking down the street, they come tearing out of the owners property. He still does not attack. So much for your small nice little doggy theory.

I am 6'2" and 245. But it's not about how big the owner is. It's how they are raised.
