PHOTOS: Tornado touches down near Denver airport

Source: AP

DENVER — The National Weather Service says radar shows a tornado briefly touched down over the east runways of Denver International Airport, where thousands of people took shelter in bathrooms and stairwells until a tornado warning passed.

There are no immediate reports of damage.

Weather service meteorologist Kyle Fredin says a 97 mph gust was measured at the airport before communications with instruments there were briefly knocked out Tuesday. Dark clouds blanketed parts of the horizon over the plains to the east.

Airport officials say some flights headed to Denver were diverted elsewhere.

And I thought the cloud that I saw over my house yesterday looked angry. Damn.

Colorado has had their share, lately. Stay safe, everyone.

Edit to add: Does that picture show a micro-burst, as opposed to a tornado on the ground? I just took another look, and there doesn't seem to be a well-defined funnel, at least near the ground. Scary photo.

but that does look like a microburst on the ground. Everyone at DIA was directed to tornado shelters. I've seen the signs for them many times.

I was living in Boulder, CO, when they decided to build that airport. One thing that was pointed out was that the location was a place where tornadoes typically formed. The only surprising thing is that a good tornado hasn't already torn through the airport long since.

Got me there!

I guess I'll have to go with a "good" tornado that simply made a few mistakes.

(Kind of like my son when he got busted for smoking pot, right?)

yeah, thats some bullshit there. just because it is out on the plains doesnt mean 'typical'. better evacuate everybody who lives on a flat spot. tornadoes 'typically' form there, and the only surprising thing is that a good tornado hasnt already torn through the airport long since.

for the airport, the Denver Post happily reported that tornadoes supposedly formed there.
