Brazil unrest: 'Million' join protests in 100 cities

Source: BBC News

More than a million people are reported to have taken part in protests in about 100 cities across Brazil, the latest in a wave of demonstrations.

Violence erupted in many places and an 18-year-old man died when a car drove through a barricade in Sao Paulo state.

Protests began more than a week ago over high transport fares but are also highlighting corruption and the cost of next year's football World Cup.

President Dilma Rousseff called off a trip to Japan to deal with the crisis.

One million march across Brazil in biggest protests yet.

(Reuters) - An estimated 1 million people took to the streets in cities across Brazil on Thursday as the country's biggest protests in two decades intensified despite government concessions meant to quell the demonstrations.

Undeterred by the reversal of transport fare hikes that sparked the protests, and promises of better public services, demonstrators marched around two international football matches and in locales as diverse as the Amazon capital of Manaus and the prosperous southern city of Florianopolis.

While the protests remained mostly peaceful, the growing number of participants led to occasional outbursts of violence and vandalism in some cities. In central Rio de Janeiro, where 300,000 people marched, police afterwards chased looters and dispersed people crowding into surrounding areas.

"Twenty cents was just the start," read signs held by many converging along the Avenida Paulista, the broad avenue in central São Paulo, referring to the bus fare reductions. Police there said 110,000 people lined the avenue.

have the courage to demand reform when they are screwed by their corporate "masters." America has such a proud tradition (until the last few decades) of standing up for themselves and other countries.

What happened? How can we allow this complete corporate take-over of democracy and the unjust lives imposed upon us without putting up one helluva fight?

What happened you ask ?

Did you see how they came after Occupy Wall Street ?

Our country proves time and time again that dissenters will be put in their place.

And worse. Look what happened for the decades of the fight for unions or the anti-war protests of the 60s/70s. Expect it.

The Chicago cops murdered Fred hampton.
Eugene Debs was jailed for years for being against WW1
The list is nearly endless...Now with the militarization of the police function, the clampdown is close to total.

and I am " socialist in Tn." also. The longer we postpone this fight (for our freedoms including Unions again) the worse it will be. I am not saying anything personal, I do the same as you probably.
It seems the time has come (actually long ago) for us to physically suffer so the lives of our grandchildren may be better.
Personally, I would prefer we form a viable political party and elect a Bernie Sanders or a different true Progressive, an FDR of our time
and through his/her leadership, help them "tear down that wall," as the b grade actor once said. Sadly, that same shitty actor created the figurative wall in America (again) that must be destroyed.
BTW, I don't think his words had anything to do with the collapse of the former USSR.
I know that I'm a dreamer.
