(Texas) House panel quickly OKs 3 abortion bills

Source: Austin American-Statesman

The House State Affairs Committee, with no discussion, approved three abortion-related bills with party-line votes, restoring the ban on abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy that had been stripped out of Senate Bill 5.

The committee also approved two bills that had been the subject of more than 10 hours of testimony, and one loud protest that led to a brief recess so order could be restored, in a hearing that had ended at 3:40 a.m. Friday.

Friday afternoon’s specially called meeting lasted about 15 minutes. Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Houston, asked Cook if he would accept amendments in committee. Cook said he preferred to handle amendments on the House floor, where debate is likely to begin Sunday.

Over 500 speakers attended the committee meeting with the intention of stalling two of the three bills past the end of the special session. Due to the onerous requirements of this legislation the number of clinics that could provide abortion services would be reduced from 47 to 5.

Absolutely obsessed. They can't change. They won't change. We need to change them out.

It's got nothing to do with reproductive rights, sexism, or even women. It's about one thing and one thing only: fundamentalist fetus love. The Republican party is in the absolute grip of religious zealots who believe an egg+a sperm has the same value as a child. People on our side who try to frame this as a woman-hating issue are wearing blinders. Its RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM not sexism at work here. Recognize the problem!!!

I use to live in ElPaso in the early 60s. We left in 63. I don't think I'd ever want to go back there again.

West Texas women will be forced to give birth to babies they don't want, didn't plan, can't afford and can't convince anyone to adopt because the babies aren't white.

Strange thing is, there seems to be a fad among your harder-core Christian to adopt babies from foreign countries. If you're willing to come up with thousands and thousands of dollars (or can convince people to give you the money - we run quite a few ads and stories about people looking for bucks to complete adoptions of babies born in Africa or Asia), you will be The Man and The Woman in that little cloistered world. But adopt a non-Caucasian infant born in the US? No, that wouldn't do at all. This interests me about President Putin's ban on Americans adopting Russian babies: the same folks who are screaming about how unfair it is they can't adopt Russian babies wouldn't even think about adopting American-borns.

The biggest shock was not that hundreds of citizens lined up to testify, or that they were cut off (Surprise, surprise). It was that this was being done in special session.
