A friend of mine registers his 82-foot sailboat in the Caymans to escape US taxes. Three drunks sailed it out of Sausalito and grounded it in the Farallons. Guess who paid $500,00+ to get it back to Sausalito.

(28,581 posts)That is a slippery slope I'm not willing to go down. We are a society that is supposed to care for one another and help, even when someone makes a mistake.
Republicans like to play the every man for himself, boot-straps, libertarian bullshit (unless of course it comes to sexual body parts) and I happen to disagree with them on how a humane and caring society should treat their citizens.

One thing I carry now on trips like that is a SPOT Messenger - for emergencies, but mainly so I can send a little check-in message a few times a day. Makes the folks at home feel better, and if I do drop out of sight they'll know how far I got beforehand...
