Latest Polling Shows Hoekstra's Numbers Slipping
The Super Bowl ad that brought former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra a raft of criticism for its portrayal of an Asian woman has apparently cost him some support from GOP voters. According to a new survey released by Public Policy Polling, Hoekstra has slipped at least five percentage points against Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who he is attempting to unseat this November.
The ad, which featured an Asian woman speaking broken English, created a firestorm regarding allegations it was racially insensitive. Hoekstra's campaign denied the charges and stated the ad was meant to show how his opponent's spending record had benefited China's economy over that of the U.S.
Hoekstra's campaign has discontinued the ad and erased all references to it from his official website, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Hoekstra still holds a commanding lead over all the other GOP candidates vying for a chance to unseat Stabenow in November. Public Policy Polling puts his lead at 42 percent, while his nearest competitor, Clark Durant, is polling at 9 percent.
