Democratic Women Boycott House Contraception Hearing After Republicans Prevent Women From Testifying

Democratic Women Boycott House Contraception Hearing After Republicans Prevent Women From Testifying

By Igor Volsky on Feb 16, 2012 at 10:52 am

This morning, Democrats tore into House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) for preventing women and minorities from testifying before a hearing examining the Obama administration’s new regulation requiring employers and insurers to provide contraception coverage to their employees. Republicans oppose the administration’s rule and have sponsored legislation that would allow employers to limit the availability of birth control to women.

Ranking committee member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) had asked Issa to include a female witness at the hearing, but the Chairman refused, arguing that “As the hearing is not about reproductive rights and contraception but instead about the Administration’s actions as they relate to freedom of religion and conscience, he believes that Ms. Fluke is not an appropriate witness.”

And so Cummings, along with the Democratic women on the panel, took their request to the hearing room, demanding that Issa consider the testimony of a female college student. But the California congressman insisted that the hearing should focus on the rules’ alleged infringement on “religious liberty,” not contraception coverage, and denied the request. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) walked out of the hearing in protest of his decision, citing frustration over the fact that the first panel of witnesses consisted only of male religious leaders against the rule. Holmes Norton said she will not return, calling Issa’s chairmanship an “autocratic regime.”

http://thinkprogress.org/health/2012/02/16/426850/democratic-women-boycott-issas-contraception-hearing-for-preventing-women-from-testifying/

Those allowed to testify today make up the tables and immediately behind, the rest of the room is made up of those NOT ALLOWED to testify.

Notice any particular "gender" difference?

I suggested he pull those men out of the 18th century and give them all a crash course on how birth control works. It is not for a bunch of narcissistic ignorants to decide if a woman should have the God given choice to ovulate or not. It is not a religious issue in the slightest. I am tired of hearing it is abortion. It's not. Talk about a bunch of ignorant idiots.

SANTORUM NEW RULE COMING SOON! HE'S LEARNING FROM THE BEST.

An Islamic cleric residing in Europe said that women should not be close to bananas or cucumbers, in order to avoid any “sexual thoughts.”

The unnamed sheikh, who was featured in an article on el-Senousa news, was quoted saying that if women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male related to them such as their a father or husband, should cut the items into small pieces and serve.

He said that these fruits and vegetables “resemble the male penis” and hence could arouse women or “make them think of sex.”

In that group has direct involvement in the rule at hand. In other words, none of them are the head of a hospital or university. Issa, who is filthy rich, has a long history of autocratic control so nothing else could be expected.

This is going to be big. Maybe even the media will start talking about it by evening, not just on Rachel's show, but maybe even on the CNN and that faux news station owned by Republicans.

Seriously, do they honestly think the majority of Americans agree with a bunch of conservative religious bastards that don't even believe in birth control?

Every day the right wing seems even more strident and insane.

65. Why don't Republicans seem to care how they appear to intelligent informed voters?
Thu Feb 16, 2012, 05:45 PM
Feb 2012

I believe this seeming disregard for mass opinion is due to their belief that they've got the election "jacked" already.

Few talk about the fact that especially since 2010, (when 29 million of "us&quot , sat home in a snit, the Republicans have gained control of almost all the state legislatures and governorships. With that control they are in a perfect position to not only disenfranchise millions of likely Democratic voters but "jimmy" the numbers as well.

There is no other explaination I can see.

I submit that they will use mass election fraud to win the elections not only in Washington but in the State and local races as well.

I strongly recommend that "we" ALL put aside our differences and that for the survival of our Republic we ALL come out to vote in November! And regardless of party we ALL vote Democratic straight down the line this time (no third party nonsense). AND that if we can, get active in Democratic Clubs throughout the country and join organizations promoting fair and accurate elections like the League of Women Voters.

Only a huge landslide can overwhelm the rigged elections we can expect to see from these cretins.

Just my very strong opinion.

Hi TROU-

agree with you 100%

Gotta win the house back, hold the senate, win Obama's reelection and then swith the US Supreme Court back

only reason people lost in 2010 was the Dems sat and didn't come out and vote.

WE must vote.

Is the RIGHT of the person regardless of religion. If I worked for a Catholic Organization and received Health Insurance, then they pay for my conctraceptives. It's been a done deal for years, why now? The GOP is reaching for straws. And Santorum has 7 kids at home, being so fertile, and a Catholic, any outside? Being a career Politician, he makes atleast $150K a month (with expense accts); of course he wants to stay in this kind of position. I call the GOP 2-Dick's and a Newt!!!

That's what they've got in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan too.

They're the Taliban and they don't even realize it.

I'm glad at least the MISOGYNY is right out in the open, at least. No more, "Oh don't get your panties in a twist, pretty lady, we don't mean no harm. Just don't worry your little head, we'll take care of everything"

Too many women have been quick to shy away from identification with the F word (Feminist), claiming there's no further need, but I think this blatant patriarchal power grab will do a lot to prove that misogyny is alive and well, and that women must continue to fight it.

It's also why I'm so appreciative to DU for the Planned Parenthood campaign.

It is not the case that if you are a woman or a minority you may not testify. testimony was limited to freedom of religion and conscience issues and would not include is discussions of reproductive rights.

However, can testimony be limited by a committee chair? That should be the issue here.

Fri Feb 17, 2012, 01:09 PM

religion shouldn't be an excuse for oppression.

Issa's concern; about violating the First Amendment is a De Facto violation of the First Amendment, because it gives respect to religious views over the secular requirements of a large % if not over half the nation's population and by only hearing one side of the story, he prevented the people's verbal petition of Government for redress of grievances.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_amendment

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

President Obama by requiring all insurance companies to cover birth control, was sticking to the secular aspect which is where government should be.

The only shaky ground that I can see for Obama is if he requires insurance companies used by churches to provide birth control free of charge while not requiring the rest of the insurance industry to do the same, this free coverage should be universal.

Thanks for the thread, kpete.
