Reid: GOP Can Avoid Rules Changes If They Confirm 7

WASHINGTON Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday that Republicans must confirm at least seven presidential appointees they've been blocking if they want to avoid a controversial change in Senate rules as early as this week.
A compromise deal to confirm fewer than those seven will not suffice, Reid said only hours before a planned bipartisan gathering on the deeply divisive issue.
The Nevada Democrat again threatened to change Senate rules to allow simple-majority votes for presidential nominees other than judges. Despite virulent protests by Republicans, Reid called the move "a minor change, no big deal."
Republicans have often delayed or blocked presidential nominees by using their filibuster powers, which allow 41 senators to block actions in the 100-member chamber. Many senators cherish rules and traditions that give minority members far more power than anything enjoyed by minority-party members of the House

(23,097 posts)What is the state of Harry Reid's spine? Does he even have one? We're hoping it's there and quite functional, but evidence to date shows that it's non-existent. Woe until him if he capitulates once again, proving his utter spinlessness, and let's them off with 3 approvals, none of which will be Richard Cordray.

The Senate is already structured unbalanced to majority vote for protections of States. I do not think that the Founding Fathers foresaw the present imbalance.
We (Nation and Democratic Party) are far past the over exposed date on Harry Reid as Senate Leader or even Senator D-NV.
I would go so far as to say that Maya Miller (RIP) is still my choice for the Democratic NV Senate primary (Maya finished 2nd) back when Reid was first elected Senator-NV.
Diane Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi are past their expire date as well and do not have my respect but would vote for DiFi still another time given no other choice. DiFi's husband, Richard Blum, is a major war profiteer.
The Democratic Party can and should do better for The People, the USA, and the World, natural and human.
A start would be for Reid to hold to his word about changing the filibuster rule if the seven are not seated. I would go farther to say that the filibuster rule should be changed to simple majority if the Senate fails to approve another POTUS Obama appointee. Sheeesh Many of us Democrats are flabbergasted at some of the individuals POTUS Obama selects for positions.
