Explosive found at Brazil shrine before pope trip: army

Source: AFP

SAO PAULO — A homemade explosive device was discovered in the bathroom of the parking garage of the Brazilian shrine that Pope Francis will visit this week, the military said Monday.

The military said the device was destroyed after its discovery on Sunday at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida between Rio and Sao Paulo, which the pope is due to visit on Wednesday.

A Sao Paulo military police spokesman told AFP that the explosive was "insignificant, of low power" and that it was not in an area that the pope or pilgrims would have gone to.

The explosive was found during a security training session.

I just clicked the link you posted, and this part of the story is almost and afterthought.

It's strange. AFP changed the headline, I guess. Brazilians throng streets to greet pope HEre is the beginning of the 4th paragraph:

After massive protests over lagging public services and corruption that regularly ended in violence in recent weeks, authorities wanted to ensure an incident-free visit for the pontiff.

The army said soldiers discovered an explosive device during a training session on Sunday in a bathroom at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Sao Paulo state, which the pope will visit on Wednesday.

The home-made device was destroyed and authorities said it was nowhere near the area where the pope or pilgrims will congregate.
Pope Francis came to Brazil, an emerging power with a shrinking Catholic flock, to promote his vision of a more humble church and to attend World Youth Day, a week-long event drawing more than one million young Catholics.

It seems the AFP changed the story.
