In emotional Lansing abortion debate, tears, rage, personal stories of rape, miscarriage

Source: Detroit Free Press

State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer was raped 20 years ago.

State Rep. Colleen Lamonte had a difficult and painful miscarriage at 12 weeks of pregnancy.

State Rep. Vickie Barnett was forced to get advanced fetal testing to make sure her unborn children didn’t suffer from the devastating Tay Sachs genetic disorder.

The highly personal stories, delivered with tears, rage and anger, accompanied the emotional debate Wednesday on a bill that will require women to buy additional insurance rider if they want abortion coverage in their health insurance plans. . .

Needless to say, they had no effect today on the gerrymandered, right-wing, anti-woman GOP in Michigan. More:

The three Democratic women resorted to revealing their most painful memories as a means to try and convince their Republican colleagues to reject the abortion insurance initiative and allow voters across the state to decide the issue, rather than just the 4% of the state’s voters who signed a petition to get the law enacted.

Their pleas fell on deaf ears. The measure passed the Senate on a 27-11 vote and in the House, it was 62-47.

Shameful doesn't even begin to cover this. It's an all-out, no prisoners taken war on women in Michigan and elsewhere. It will only get worse in 2014, and look at those voting margins.

rape insurance. I guarantee he/she will make it seem that because the victim bought rape insurance, she planned to use rape as an excuse. Or, she planned to do risky things, like wearing sexy underwear, that would "force" men to rape her.

This is one of the most despicable things I have ever heard.

Hadn't even occured to me.

This is so enraging I am speechless with disgust.

Just can't put into words what those puke scum and their "deaf ears" deserve. Soulless, inhuman woman-killers.

MURDERERS. Of actual people (namely, Women), not potential, unformed ones.

PROTECTORS of RAPISTS and of violence against women.

It will take hard, painful, real life lessons that effect white, Christian women who have difficulties with a pregnancy and / or a few young, blonde females to be raped for people to realize what this extra fee for "abortion services" means to thier lives.

They are thinking, "why should I pay extra for something I morally object to because it's killing". They don't understand that a D & C after a miscarriage would be an abortion service.

As for politics, it just creates a wedge issue of misinformed people voting against their own best interests over lies. Total and complete ginned up BS on the right to turn out the moral church brigade on Election Day. It's disgusting!

They are all over west Michigan, headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI, home to Calvin College and the deVos family of AmWay and Blackwater fame. The deVos's effectively own Grand Rapids, a town that still rolls up the sidewalks on Sunday (downtown, at least). They are big movers in the MI GOP.

The Democratic Party has only a tenuous hold on a state majority here. Our largest stronghold has always been my hometown, Detroit. You all know what's happening there. Not urban renewal, more like urban removal! It makes me sick to my stomach.

... and if they are male, to someone they actually care about, like their wife or daughter. Like the conversion stories of politicians whose favorite son turns out to be gay, these *holes will not get it until it is that personal.

Every woman knows someone who was raped. Every woman knows many women who have miscarried.

Words just fail me at this point.
