US ready to aid Russia on Olympic security: Pentagon
Source: AFP/Yahoo
Washington (AFP) - The United States is ready to help Russia's security operation for the Winter Olympics, the Pentagon said Saturday, after twin suicide bombings sparked concern next month's extravaganza could be targeted.
US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel offered American support during a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, the Pentagon said.

"Secretary Hagel also assured Minister Shoigu that the United States stands ready to provide security assistance to Russia for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, if requested."

I do not support this. Russia's bid is just that, theirs. They are responsible for providing security.

(6,045 posts)There will be at least one or more attacks or at least attempts during the games lets just hope Russia knows what they are doing in terms of security or Putin's little pet project could go down as the worse games ever! Even worse than Munich or even Atlanta when the Christian Tea Bagger terrorist, Eric Rudolph bombed, the 1996 Olympics.
We will see.

(31,997 posts)Should we cancel marathons in this country since one was bombed? We were clearly in over our heads since we could not stop that bombing even though we were warned by foreign intelligence services, including Russia, about the bombers.

(17,469 posts)we shouldn't be there, just like we should not have gone to Beijing.
Second, why invite the most incompetent security "experts" in the world? Inviting Israel, I can understand, but the the only thing the U.S. is good for is arresting the wrong people, spying on innocent people, and killing people during interrogation/arrest.
Third, why is tax-payer money be wasted on this nonsense? The Olympics is nothing but a corporate sports orgy.

(46,416 posts)I don't see anything wrong with offering help--they are free to turn us down, but the gesture of goodwill is there. I believe we will provide some of our own security for the US delegation, anyway--whether it's military in nature, I don't know.

(22,000 posts)you are also saying that you are able to provide security. I honestly don't think the Russians can do that. As several people have stated, they are way in over their heads. The corruption and anti-gay laws, now the security issues. They should have never been awarded the 2014 Olympic games

(46,416 posts)for a whole host of reasons. So the bigger countries involved should be offering as much support and security as feasible, because we all want it to be safe and successful, regardless of who is hosting or what they did or didn't do to prepare.

(22,000 posts)whether it be on security or monetary issues. Part of the bidding process is showing they can provide that. So obviously they lied about what they were capable of. There were two other countries who also bid against Russia and lost because they committee was convinced that Russia had the better bid. They obviously made a mistake.

(22,000 posts)When Russia bid for the Olympics, shouldn't security concerns been addressed. The Olympic Committee awarded them the games over two other cities based on the bid they made. So, if security concerns weren't taken seriously why did they get the bid? Were they lying?

(25,592 posts)Why must we always have animosity toward other countries. Why do we, as a country have to have enemies to function? Why can't we cooperate with other countries, for a change, to remedy a world wide problem? Never mind we are up to our eye brows in our own acts of terrorism against other countries, assuming some agency of our own government is not behind the Russian bombing, why can't we all cooperate in making the world safer? (See my sig line)
Needing an adversary, or enemy to function is a Conservative, Right-wing need. People on the Left have no such compulsion. We have instead, empathy, caring for others, wanting to help others. You seem to be having a problem with that, helping, that is.

(22,000 posts)Doesn't matter to me whether we are talking about Russia, Japan, India, etc. The Olympics is a contract. They have agreed to host the games. Part of that was providing security. Did we help GB during the 2012 games? No Vancouver during the 2010 games? No. China during the 2008 games? No. All of those countries provided their own security and did it without an incident.
Again security is part of the contract of hosting the Olympics. So were they deceiving the Olympic Committee by telling them that there was adequate security? Yes or No? Please don't answer by floating CT about the US bombing Russia.
I don't have any problem with empathy, or caring for others thank you very much. You don't know me and are not qualified to make judgement about what I do or don't believe.
