O'Malley's final State of the State pitches minimum wage

Source: Baltimore Sun

Gov. Martin O’Malley delivered the final State of the State speech of his tenure Thursday in an address that recounted his seven years as governor and argued for policies to help the middle class.

“We’ve lost sight of how our economy works when our economy is actually working,” he said. “Prosperity doesn't trickle down from the top. It never has. It's built from the middle out — and from the middle up.”

The term-limited O’Malley, who is considering whether to run for president, reflected on his time in the Governor’s Mansion as a period of tough choices and progress during the economic recession during his 30-minute speech, saying he left the state better than when he took office.

"Seven years ago, we were failing to live up to our state's full potential," O'Malley said. "Seven years later, we are not just one Maryland, but in many measures we are number one Maryland."

Baltimore has a totally different set of issues and very, very difficult and complex set of problems to grapple with. Stephanie is realizing this. I used to work for Pete Rawlings (RIP). Because there is so much corruption and insider politics, you have to run that city with an iron fist. There are still so many problems, far too complex to address by one mayor in one or two terms. I think O'Malley has redeemed himself as governor. All those mistakes he made as mayor, he has realized as governor can be rectified when we works well with others. Put it this way: he is no Parris Glendenning and certainly no Bob Ehrlich. And thank God for that.

roughshod over the fourth amendment and that he was wrong to do so. Maybe he has said that and I missed it, but I haven't seen it. He would have his police do weekend sweeps of corners and haul every young black male on the street downtown. My neighbor (a police officer) had to process them. Most of them were released and learned that their rights meant nothing in Baltimore.

race and income disparities in arrests, impact of discrimination on school children. For that I give him some credit. He's not perfect and no politician is. But I think he's making up for it. The proof I need is in his record, which has been stellar on the crime issue and on just about every issue that I care about...and this as a black woman.
