SOLOTHURN, Switzerland, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- A 28-year-old Solothurn man has died after being injured while stage-diving at a Suicidal Tendencies concert in Switzerland.
---
After his fall, the man was walking around and wanted to go home. "Our team decided, however, that he is immediately taken to hospital care," Kofmehl said.
After being taken to Bern University Hospital, the man suffered an epileptic seizure and died.
"This is a huge concern for us," said Kofmehl. "The whole thing is very, very tragic."
Kofmehl indicated that this is the first time hes even seen this sort of thing happen to an audience member during his 40 years of seeing stage dives at guitar concerts.

This is very tragic. I've stage dived countless times. To think that this could have been me. Very unfortunate that this guy was out wanting to have fun and ended it very horribly for him.
My condolences to his family.

(17,862 posts)Do you climb on stage and then dive backwards into the crowd?

(5,668 posts)been around for decades didn't know anyone didn't know smh
jump into the crowd. I'd say nobody was there to break his fall. and fortunately the band was adult enough to get him to a hospital.

(5,668 posts)too bad it didn't end well but someone hits the concrete it says something for a band like SS to force him to the hospital.

(6,286 posts)And yeah, that was a loooong time ago. The venue made the mistake of having the seating in the form of separate folding chairs. Didn't take long for those to go flying around. I didn't leave my seat for fear of it being thrown away, but my head was on a swivel big time until they finished their set.

(17,862 posts)Not one of favorite bands. I am stuck in the 1960s/1970s and I like it. I haven't been to a rock concert in over 30 years. Except for Rush/REM/U2/Police/Dire Straits I don't care much for bands who have made music since about 1980.

(55,445 posts)and I lost a teammate on the varsity basketball team for the season with a broken femur after he went stage diving at a Smashing Pumpkins concert...
I'd only ever gone to rap/reggae/R&B concerts, so the mere concept of stage diving took a lot of explaining for me....

(10,039 posts)This is from memory so it might not be 100%. Stage diving is the act of climbing on stage, during a live performance, then swan-diving into and being caught by the crowd. It originated with hard-core punk and thrash/speed metal bands as an act of defiance against overzealous security. The idea being "I'm up on this stage now but you're sure as hell not going to throw me off. ...rent-a-pig" "I'll just see myself off" The practice was popularized by grunge acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam who featured them prominently in their, high-rotation, music videos. Including a ridiculously high drop by Eddie Vedder (Pear Jam) in the video for the song Even Flow.

(1,245 posts)The first Dream Academy album was pretty great ... Life in a Northern Town is a classic track. I bought cause I loved the Floyd so, so much back then, and Gilmour played on and iirc even co-wrote some songs on that album. They went pretty downhill from there although their other two later albums had some decent songs ... 'Indian Summer' and their cover of Lennon's 'Love'.
Dream Syndicate also put out a couple really good albums ... I wanna say 'Days of Wine and Roses' and ... I forget the 2nd one's name.
Ah, my college years ... when I worshiped U2, REM, The Cure, The Smiths, The Replacements, and INXS. And loved Love and Rockets, Depeche Mode, New Order, Stone Roses, The Alarm, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, The Stranglers ... Then came Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone/Temple of the Dog/Pearl Jam just as I was finishing school.
Those were the great years of alternative rock, man ...

(10,056 posts)As a former stage diver myself, you always have to be careful to protect your head.
I've seen some bad dives in my day. The worst are the ones that plunge headfirst.
You flop not dive folks....
Condolences to his family.

(650 posts)I guess there are less exciting ways to meet your maker.
Brings me back to a Metallica show in the early 80's in Cedar Rapids (Ride the Lightning tour - opening for W.A.S.P. LOL!). The local Iowans had probably never seen it before and clearly were unaware that you're supposed to break the fall of the stage diver. It was like the parting of the Red Sea and seemed to take forever to hit that concrete floor. Then they all just look at you with a puzzled "WTF" look. If this ever happens to you, try to slap the floor hard to absorb the energy before the rest of your brain and organs hit the floor.

(62,525 posts)I "dived" a few times in my day and you always aim for the thickest crowd.
I've seen guys slam into the floor, it's not pretty.
Sad to hear about this.

(11,010 posts)They had been asking for no stagediving for most of the show, and then a guy hit the cement. He was taken out in a backbrace. Rollins was upset at it all and pleading for the crowd to calm down afterward. "One of our friends is going to wake up in the hospital, and I don't want to see that happen to anyone else," he said.

(4,012 posts)a few times a year. I go to a lot of metal shows and saw ST last year in Pomona, California. There were only a few stage dives, but a nice little pit. I've been to the Mayhem Festival for the last 3 years and that is a whole day of metal & moshing....awesome!!! I've been in pit for Slayer, Pantera, Lamb of God, Anthrax, and MANY others.
In my experience, most of the people in the pit (and stage diving) know they are taking a chance. Hey, my buddy got his nose broken at that Lamb of God show & didn't complain...hell he bragged about how brutal the pit was (and it WAS). We both knew that (or worse) could happen in the pit...it's a chance you take.
