Michael Sam's Dad Actually OK With Son's Homosexuality, Claims He Was 'Terribly Misquoted'

Source: TPM

TOM KLUDT – FEBRUARY 14, 2014, 2:56 PM EST

In a pretty dramatic turnabout, Michael Sam's father now says he has no qualms with his son's coming out. No, Michael Sam Sr. claimed in an interview with the Galveston Daily News, he never described himself as "old school" and "a man-and-a-woman type of guy."

The elder Sam said he was "terribly misquoted" by the New York Times in a story that ran earlier this week after his son, an All-American defensive end at Missouri, announced that he is gay. The Times also quoted Michael Sam Sr. as saying he doesn't want his "grandkids raised in that kind of environment."

"I did not say anything about my grandkids," he said, as quoted by ESPN.

After thinking it over, the elder Sam said he believes his son did the right thing. The Times told the Daily News that it quoted Sam Sr. "accurately and fairly."

What matters is the father and son relationship is going to change, for the better, I hope. It sounds like Sr. had a fairly typical knee-jerk reaction to something he had never had to face. And then, he remembered that he loves his son. Now, he gets to grow as a human being. Pretty awesome benefit of learning your son is gay.

Good first steps.

he hears his son is gay via text message, and 5 minutes later someone is sticking a microphone in his face. It sometimes take people a little bit to process things.

I know from personal experience. If you knew my life story, you'd be amazed that I can say that I really miss my dad. He's been gone for 11 years.

all, they did it. If there is love there, it will find a way. Congratulations, again, to Michael. His Dad just grew up a bit.

NYT quoted him correctly. He just saw the loss of the fringe benefits of having a sports superstar for a son.

Sure, whose mind is creative enough to put THOSE words in his mouth?

Last Tuesday, Michael Sam Sr. was at a Denny’s near his home outside Dallas to celebrate his birthday when his son sent him a text message.

Dad, I’m gay, he wrote.

The party stopped cold. “I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” Sam Sr. said. “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.

“I’m old school,” he added. “I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy.” As evidence, he pointed out that he had taken an older son to Mexico to lose his virginity.

Sure. This is Jayson Blair type of forgery right Papa Sam?

Oh yeah Papa Sam. Explain why a bunch of your kids are either dead, in prison, or missing.
