Mass killer Anders Breivik threatens hunger strike for better video games, end of “torture”

Source: euronews.com

Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik has threatened to start a hunger strike over his living conditions in jail, it has emerged.

Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011, compared prison to “torture” and bemoaned, among other things, the lack of an up-to-date video games console in his cell.

His comments were made in a four-page hand-written letter to penitentiary officials, which contains a dozen requests, including making his jail time compliant with European regulations. They also tackle issues of fundamental rights, such as a daily walk and communication.

Breivik requests the Playstation 2 he has access to is replaced by a more recent Playstation 3. “Other inmates have access to video games for adults while I can only play the less interesting children video games. One example is ‘Rayman Revolution,’ a game designed for 3-year-olds,” the 35-year-old wrote.

Will this person actually be released from prison in his 50's? A 21 year sentence for killing all these children. WTF?

but this is a good example of a country being way too soft on criminals.

Sorry, murderers getting access to video games? What the fuck? This guy should be in solitary at best though I think in extreme cases like his, the death penalty would have been fully and absolutely justified.

Some criminals simply cannot and should not be rehabilitated. We don't need him spouting his garbage for the next twenty years or whatever "punishment" Norway hands out.

-snip-

The indeterminate penalty (civilian penal code), called "preventive detention" (Norwegian: forvaring), is set at up to 21 years' imprisonment, with no eligibility for parole for a time period not exceeding 10 years. If the prisoner is still considered dangerous after serving the original sentence, the detention can be extended by five years at a time. Renewal of the detention every five years can in theory result in actual life imprisonment. Preventive detention is used when the prisoner is deemed a danger to society and there is a great chance of his committing violent crimes in the future. However, after the minimum time period has elapsed, the offender can petition for parole once every year, and this may be granted if it is determined that he is no longer a danger to society.

Anders Behring Breivik

-snip-

He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, in a form of preventive detention that required a minimum of 10 years incarceration and the possibility of an extension of that incarceration for as long as he is deemed a danger to society.

Norway has its own standards and its own principles, and their strikingly humane treatment of this man is not for his own benefit (unless he can use these conditions to become more functional), but in support of their own culture. Which is good.

I can't find it within myself to blame any culture which would put such a man to death for his crimes, but I can find it within myself to admire the culture which does not.

His cell should have projections/slides 24/7 of all the young innocent victims he murdered -- preferably spaced at a rhythm that would make him VERY uncomfortable. THAT would be torture, but I'm sorry, rather deserved torture.
If he goes on a hunger strike, tant pis, peggio per lui.

In many countries the death penalty is ruled out as immoral. Then how punishment is appropriate before it reflects on the punisher? In a "moral" justice system the decision can be difficult.

Under Norwegian law, he can be kept in prison indefinitely if he is still dangerous, and writing letters claiming that access to the wrong video games qualifies as torture, plus threatening violence against Norwegian authorities, would serve as evidence that he is dangerous.

If the article is correct, he threatened the prison authorities with violence from supporters (all 12 of them), and predicted that Norway will have a fascist regime:

“You have put me through hell (…) and I won’t be able to survive it much longer. You are killing me,” Breivik writes to the prison authorities, brandishing the threat of a hunger strike.

“If I die, all the far right radicals and extremists in the European world will know exactly which individuals tortured me to death (…)This could have consequences for some individuals on the short term but also when Norway will have a new fascist regime in 13 to 40 years,” warns the killer, who considers himself a “political prisoner.”

Breivik appears nuts or a sociopath, but the Norwegian civil authorities are not nuts and are not sociopaths, and they aren't going to let this guy out while his mental apparatus works this way. Nor are they likely to respond to threats of violence from supporters by expanding his access to the internet.

All this only renews my sense of grief over his killing spree. That the lives of so many functional human beings could be ended by such a twisted piece of humanity is hard to bear, and it must be even more painful for the Norwegians.

Breivik tells court he practised his shot using a 'holographic aiming device' while playing video game
Helen Pidd in Oslo
theguardian.com, Thursday 19 April 2012 07.08 EDT

Anders Behring Breivik told the court he practised his shot using the 'holographic aiming device' he had bought to use with the war simulation game ...

"You develop target acquisition," he said. He used a similar device during the shooting attacks that left 69 dead at a political youth camp on the island of Utøya on 22 July.

Describing the game, he said: "It consists of many hundreds of different tasks and some of these tasks can be compared with an attack, for real. That's why it's used by many armies throughout the world. It's very good for acquiring experience related to sights systems" ...

I can see giving him the privilege of being allowed to take a daily walk. The communications access, sure...stamps, monitored phone privileges, limited access to the internet and to daily news. I noticed he didn't ask for better food...I would have though the food would have been the worst part of prison.

Fuck him and the entirety of Norwegian fascism over the video games though...for a guy that murders children, Rayman is probably too violent of a video game...perhaps Tetris would be more to his liking.
