(Reuters) A gay rights group will be allowed to march in Bostons St. Patricks Day parade, event organizers said on Saturday, reversing a 20-year-long stance after the citys new mayor intervened.
It was unclear, however, if marchers from MassEquality, one of the largest gay rights advocacy groups in Massachusetts, would be permitted to carry signs or use slogans identifying themselves as gay men and women, which may yet prove a sticking point.
We dont ban gays, we just want to keep the parade an Irish parade, Tim Duross, the lead organizer of the parade that celebrates the citys Irish heritage and honors military veterans, said in a telephone interview on Saturday.
He cited parade rules banning political protest and references to sexual orientation, suggesting that MassEquality was established enough not to have to explain who they are.

(55,147 posts)BOSTON Organizers of Bostons St. Patricks Day parade are easing their two-decade long ban on gay groups by inviting marchers from an organization that seeks to preserve marriage equality for same-sex couples.
A MassEquality official said Saturday a group of gay military veterans can march under its banner as part of a deal brokered by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh.
But participants from the gay rights group will not be allowed to wear clothing or hold signs that include the word gay or refer to sexual orientation while marching in the parade that draws an estimated one million spectators every year to South Boston.

Because no Irish people are gay, just like no Iranians are gay? Because no members of the military are gay? Why are military veterans of all nationalities any more Irish (or any more Irish-American) than gay people?
Glad we heard from the Boston's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
How do reporters just let people get away with spewing any kind of crap? They're supposed to be journalists, not stenographers.
By the way, in which Irish country was Duross born? In which branch of the military did he serve? Anyone know? Anyone care?
