A Lehigh County doctor arrested last week on tax evasion charges appeared to be planning a move to Uruguay or Honduras to start a banana plantation and had amassed a small arsenal of assault rifles, federal prosecutors said in court documents.
Following a hearing Wednesday where prosecutors argued that Dr. Erik von Kiel could not be trusted to appear for trial, U.S. Magistrate Judge Lynne A. Sitarski ordered the former Lehigh County Prison medical director held without bail.
"If von Kiel is released on bail, he is not just a flight risk; he is almost a flight certainty," Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Dubnoff wrote in a detention motion filed this week.

Court papers say von Kiel instructed his employer, prison health service contractor PrimeCare Medical, not to withhold federal income tax and to deposit his paychecks into an account controlled by a Utah-based religious medical society. The society, the International Academy of Lymphology, would wire the money into accounts controlled by von Kiel's church. Von Kiel used the money to buy things like a seven-bedroom house in Upper Macungie and a batting cage for his son, prosecutors allege.
