Issa apologizes, skirts censure
Source: UT San Diego
A chastened Rep. Darrell Issa says he has apologized to a fellow senior lawmaker for abruptly cutting off his microphone during a hearing Wednesday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Issa, R-Vista, said he made a personal apology on Thursday to the man he silenced, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.
Mr. Cummings is a member of Congress who works very hard for his constituents, he said.
Issas remarks came during a telephonic conversation with U-T San Diego after a House condemnation resolution pressed by Democrats earlier in the day failed to pass.

Rep. Darrell Issa Apologizes to Cummings for Cutting Off Mic at IRS Hearing
Congressman Darrell Issa has officially apologized to colleague Elijah Cummings for cutting off his mic at the end of a contentious IRS hearing on Wednesday. Following the heated exchange, Issa accused Cummings of slandering him, but Issa got quite a bit of pushback for how he conducted himself. Cummings noted separately today that some of Issas colleagues also offered apologies of their own.
But he now tells U-T San Diego that he made a personal apology to Cummings and acknowledges that in hindsight, As chairman, I should have been much more sensitive to the mood of what was going on, and I take responsibility.
Some House Democrats were so furious with Issa that some of them tried to push for the House to officially censure him, but the motion was tabled. The Congressional Black Caucus also demanded
that Issa be stripped of his chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee for being disrespectful to ranking member Cummings.

(1,309 posts)Then you must focus on where the problem lies and how to change the situation. Obama cannot do it, Warren cannot do it. The problem is that the Houser of representatives are overly influenced by Gerrymandered legislators like Boehner. You can change this by getting rid of Gerrymandering whereever it exists. Until you do that they will not listen to the people but only to corporations and other big funders of their campaign.
For starters if we could just get the US House members from Ohio in line with the way votes are cast in Ohio, democrats could pick up 4 seats and Ohio have the same number fdrom each party in the House. Until and unless we get rid of this monstrous evil in Ohio, we have no democracy in Ohio and our legislators attack women's rights, voting rights, education and a myriad of other things as they continue to cut taxes for the rich. Without competition, legislators are not accountable and our votes are worthless. Please pledge to fight Gerrymandering in Ohio. It will help the whole country and anyone of us can help in some way. (160,527 posts)Elijah Cummings knows so well, as do we all, that Issa in no way means to apologize, does not respect him or any Democrat, nor any Republican who can't do him any good.
Issa is pure filth. You have no choice but to wonder about the people who've elected him. He's hideous, and without conscience.

(36,974 posts)Issa to Megyn Kelly: Cummings Threw a Hissy Fit, Racist Accusation Beneath Response
House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa joined Megyn Kelly Thursday night to react to the uproar over him cutting off Elijah Cummings mic during a contentious IRS hearing, saying that accusations he was racist are just beneath response.
Issa suggested Cummings outburst was a pre-staged event, but Kelly asked, Who cares? Let him have his couple of minutes to rip on you! Youre a big guy, you can take it! He acknowledged that in hindsight, he might have let Cummings rant, but its completely unjustified for any member of Congress to try and get his chairmanship revoked over the incident when it was Cummings who, in Issas words, had quite a hissy fit.
Issa said, Were all human, it was a long day, and at the end of it, he wasnt denied any due response. He also noted how Democrats never tried to hold anyone accountable when they ran the House.
The Kelly interview was pre-taped, so its unclear whether it was before or after this interview that Issa said he apologized to Cummings for his actions.

I think he "caved" - well, if you can even call it that - because there was a shitstorm of a stink that rose up - outside this insular world of yes-men/women and knuckle draggers (who, let's all remember, are IN THE MINORITY, demographically!!! There are NOT more of them than there are of us. Usually the little clutches of them are just a lot louder and gutsier and in-yer-face). You better believe he hears every day from the teabagger crowd that tells him he rocks and he should keep on going. This time, I suspect, he heard more from the general population - ahem - the MAJORITY in this country - who told him in no uncertain terms that what he did was simply shitty.
I wish he would keep on going - OUT OF OFFICE.

issa is VILE. And he'll continue that way as long as there are no real consequences for that behavior. It's only being rewarded - by him not facing censure or even a mild reprimand from his Speaker. A visit to his Facebook page was MOST stomach-turning. The posts from people cheering for him and sending him big attaboys for putting that colleague of his in his place. Utterly nauseating. It just nauseates me when I read comments posted in situations like this. Or anywhere on any issue, for that matter. There are trolls and troglodytes everywhere. And I'm just left slack-jawed. It's just incomprehensible to me that there actually are people who feel this way, and who think an asshole like this guy are doing something worthwhile. W.T.F.?

"This evening, Chairman Issa telephoned me and apologized for his conduct, and I accepted his apology," Cummings said in a statement. "My sincere hope is that as we move forward, we will respect the opinions of all members of the committee, we will proceed in a deliberate and considered manner to obtain the facts, we will refrain from making accusations that have no basis in fact, and we will seek resolution rather than unnecessary conflict."
Aides to Issa did not immediately respond to an email sent late Thursday night seeking comment.
